5.0 out of 5 stars Positively PHENOMENAL!!!
This book was absolutely AWESOME!! I was quite surprised to see that some of the other reviews said they didn't like it! I really have no clue what they were talking about - If they were 'bored' with the Princess theme, then they obviously did not grasp its significance! This book was absolutely incredible!!!! I really wanted to like this book, but it just fell short. I expected to be uplifted and encouraged. I wanted to be left believing that purity of heart was possible in this world of disappointment, discouragement, and sin. Nicole's book didn't do that for me. This book was absolutely AWESOME!! I was quite surprised to see that some of the other reviews said they didn't like it! I really have no clue what they were talking about - If they were 'bored' with the Princess theme, then they obviously did not grasp its significance! This book was absolutely incredible!!!! Too many women and girls, especially in our day and age, are bombarded with the idea that 'falling in love' is just a farce; it can't really happen; it's found only in fairy tales. Our modern world is full of stylish cynicism. This book illustrates that Jesus was the Author of romance, the ultimate Romance, of course, being between us and Him. But also, for those women who the Lord has a man chosen for her to marry, the Lord can write a beautiful love story for her if she is willing to follow Him. I work at a Christian bookstore and I've set all the copies of this book we've received aside, and I've given them all away to people! I can't recommend this book highly enough! I even told my brother to read it; I told him it would help him understand how girls and women really feel, though they rarely say it. He read it and loved it. He was talking to one of his guy friends about it and ended up sending him one! As I said, I cannot praise it enough; I encourage any and all girls and women to read it. Whether you're young and single, or married with a couple kids. Not to mention that if you're a guy, this book will help you understand us females! =) I've never read a book that so perfectly described the way I feel! It is positively PHENOMENAL!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on remembering who we are, June 12, 2003
By A Customer
I loved this book! The author talks about how through Christ we are daughters of the King and how important it is to remember our true identity when the world breaks our heart, shatters our dreams, and refuses to recognize who we really are. I especially loved how she talks about woman's innate desire to be found by a prince and how Jesus is that prince for us. Even if an earthly prince never shows up, we can know that our heavenly prince has already found us and that he sees our beauty beneath the rags that this world often forces us to wear, and he loves and cherishes us. I also loved how she talks about the difference between being trying to be a princess in the world (through appearance and fame) and cultivating a princess heart which creates a beauty from within that will last for eternity. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Classic, June 24, 2004

This book earned the Women of Faith Book of the Year - and after finishing it, I believe that it is an award well deserved. This book speaks powerful truth about the heart of every woman whether married or single. For all who suffer discouragement in this world - this book offers encouragement and hope by helping you focus on and understand better the love of the only ONE who does not disappoint. I have to say I had a hard time putting it down, and plan on reading it again. As a future counselor, I am sure this book will be one that I will recommend frequently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Life Perspective, June 6, 2004

Nicole johnson is an incredible author who uses real life situations and story lines to encourage woman. The purpose of this book is to find a balance between living in despair or living a fantasy. I could not put this book down. It brought tears to my eyes whether I was crying or laughing. She is honest and genuine as well as humorous in the way she depicts her stories and characters. This is a great book when you're dealing with struggles. It helps you to remember that God is in charge of your life and everything has a purpose or is allowed for your good and He loves and cares about you. I think we all need to remember that and believe that from the depths of our heart and soul: the fact that God loves us enough to be called His daughter and friend but also to be called His very own "princess" is more than just a cliche. And this book brings all of this and much more into perspective, not in a condemning way, but a loving and compassionate way that helps you to understand the depths of God's love for us a little more with each page you turn.

2.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this book..., January 23, 2004
By A Customer
I really wanted to like this book, but it just fell short. I expected to be uplifted and encouraged. I wanted to be left believing that purity of heart was possible in this world of disappointment, discouragement, and sin. Nicole's book didn't do that for me. Any truth or practical application becomes buried beneath the constant references to princesses, usually of the Disney variety. I agree with the other reviewer who said that the "Princess" theme becomes tiresome after the first few chapters. I'd go farther and say it even becomes forced...as if the author knows there is promise and possibility in her theme, but the idea doesn't become fully realized. As for the tone, I think that in this book, the author never really hit her stride, and that's why the tone is a little off. And in the "you can't judge a book by its cover" category, I must say that the cover itself is uplifting and delightful, with its satiny feel, glowing colors, and cherubic "princess." Whoever designed it captured the essence of what I think a "princess heart" must be. Unfortunately, the book never quite succeeds at doing the same thing. Nicole is otherwise a talented performer and on-the-mark author. I only hope that she doesn't abandon this theme, but finds a way to help it come to fruition in further works. I want to keep my princess heart! But, alas, I've already gotten rid of the book. A book along the same lines that truly succeeds at achieving its point is "Do You Think I'm Beautiful?" by Angela Thomas. Don't let the title throw you...it's an encouraging read for any woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very much enjoyed, March 5, 2005
I have not yet finished this book, but am on here to buy it for some other girls and thought I'd take a look at the reviews. This book has been wonderful for me...or more so the work God has done in me through it- revealing attitudes of my own heart and desires that almost seemed to be somewhat burried inside. In reading this book I am having a new outlook on certain things...one being people and the beauty that was meant to be in this world...and the beauty that is there because of our Creator. The whole earth IS full of His glory. Jesus Christ is the greatest love story, the Father and the Holy Spirit, our Lord- He is love Himself. I recommend this book to all women. I believe it exposes the desires of our hearts and leads us to the truth that the Lord is the real love who will fullfil us.

5.0 out of 5 stars RATED 5 STARS BECAUSE THERE WEREN'T 6!!!, January 5, 2004

This was ABSOLUTELY the best book I've read all year (2003)! Not only did I laugh, cry, and read it with barely putting it down, I bought 7 copies and gave them away with tissues!

This book really reminded me of who I was meant to be... not in an arrogant and puffed up way, but that I am precious and that my Prince is coming after me, one day!! In the meantime, I am preparing to meet Him and making myself ready!

Loved it! Loved it!! Loved it!!

THIS is the "Wild at Heart" for women!! If you don't get this, you have your heart locked in a closet!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Piece for Troubled Times, November 22, 2005
This book has a very special feel to it, because it makes you feel special about who you are.

The author has an interesting take on the elements as to why the fairy tale stays allive, which are the elements of recognition, adoration and consolation.

Johnson, however, is playing up more to the notion of disneyfied fairy tales and admits that those are not what we need as adults. As a reasult she rightfully is pointing to authors like CS Lewis, George MacDonald and Tolkein as stirring the adult psyche.

"Hope is beleiving in spite of the evidence and watching the evidence change," is what Jim Wallis says who is an incredible activist and preacher.

Timing of when you read things is everything because Nicole Johnson made me beleive in those words in a different way.

If this book is read when it feels like our hopes have disappointed it will be a true gem and it has a wonderful, magical feel to it. I have felt like my hopes have disappointed me and i know that i have become cynical about some things in my life. Johnson's approach was challenging and comforting.

Her approach to sentimentaltiy versus love was important. However, I realized that as an activist that i do need that sentimental feel from romantic comedy to remind myself how to feel and how to hope. Johnson pointed to God and reminded me that such things are merely surface items, although they can be comforting at times as well.

I would say that I would recommend this book to other female christian friends during troubled times. When we face our own disappointments. Don't read this when you are feeling the need to think: Johnson is negligent of a true content analysis of our culture's approach to things. Johnson is also negligent of pulling in scripture until the last part of the book. Johnson also does not really go into much detail on feminazis versus sentimental women tendencies which would have been interesting as well. The book does not have very solid research in anything beyond the literary and cultural fairy tale and even then does not go into much detail. However she does touch briefly on these things in a way that can bring a cup of comfort in discouraging times. I do not think that she means for it to be solid research as much as something to stir our souls. It is a well written piece of work, and there is a lot of truth to her words that stirs the soul. It is well written and i love the imagery that she uses her words and it is more like an essay that you would read in a church than something that you would bring to an academic setting.

I would recommend this book, just not necessarily when you feel the need to think too critically. Like I said, it is a good piece for troubled times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Male reader with high praise for this book!, January 5, 2004
By A Customer
Wow! I am compelled to write this just to raise the overall star rating to what the author deserves. Being 53 and recently divorced, after a 32 year marriage, I have been very interested in what went wrong. I've read lots of books on relationships, divorce and healing over the past 2 years and this one has helped me to better understand how women (many of you), and perhaps my former wife, see themselves and their situations. That the author ends up pointing to Jesus as the ultimate prince, does the most to authenticate this work. The author does for women, here, what John Eldredge does for men in his book "Wild at Heart". What great encouragement for women! I would say that the first two reviewers suffer from the very hardness-of-heart that the author touches on in this book and their very response here does all the more to validate the author's insights with regard to womens' hearts in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it!, February 12, 2006
I loved this book! It was so easy to get into and spoke so many truths about women. It was simple enough to follow and the writing style was superb. If you liked Captivated by Stasi Eldridge then you'll love this one as well.
