While Dee Dee's work is always polished, sometimes she can lack emotion and spirit. This album, however, combines her excellent craft with interpretation and emotion -- by far her best work. "The Island" is extremely seductive!!!

Dee Dee Bridgewater has a voice that can come close to the range of Sarah Vaughan, can growl like Bessie Smith, and can scat like Ella. On this CD she demonstrates a remarkable versatility on a recording that features the traditional jazz idiom with clean, clear modern recording. Superior (for a mainstream jazz traditionalist who wants a current voice) to the more R&B "Love and Peace" CD.

I was late in discovering this extraordinary singer and I was thrilled by this album, which led me to buy some of her other CDs. Her treatment of "Autumn leaves" is this album is simply marvellous. What a singer!

This album depicts how jazz should be interpreted. The vocals are clean, crisp and tantalizing. Mrs. Bridgewater's vocal technique is unsurpassed. Every track leaves you at the edge of your seat. I've heard many vocalists in their attempts at jazz, Dee Dee is a natural. If ever you're home and you want to feel as if you're at a swank jazz pub, get a glass of wine and put this cd on!!

This magnificent singer is captured in her prime at one of her typically brilliant albums from the period.

Whether singing the ballads, scatting up a storm on various standards or performing Horace Silver - she is brilliant; keaping the tradition but using the more recent jazz styles as well...
Some of her live albums may be a bit more swinging, but this is still top class jazz.

I really enjoyed this album. The songs were familiar, but reinterpreted...something you can always rely on Bridgewater to do. It's rare to hear a vocalist of this caliber.
