5.0 out of 5 stars A BBC sitcom classic all together in a collectors set! December 8, 2013
Format:DVD
Length: 4:19 Mins
This is a very funny BBC sitcom that reminds me in some ways of the American sitcom All In The Family. Hyacinth Bucket (She wants it to be pronounced Bouquet) is a woman from a lower middle class family that would like everyone to believe that she comes from money and perhaps even royalty. She connives every day to improve her status and rub elbows with the elite living in her area. She tries to convince people that her family is OK but for the most part they are a bunch of misfits and perhaps a little crazy.

Her sisters are named Rose, Violet and Dasiy and Daisy is married to Onslow who is a real piece of work. His idea of dressing up is wearing a stained sleeveless T-shirt and carrying a beer around all day long. Rose is just crazy and man hungry for anyone. She will steal your husband in a heartbeat. Daisy is sweet but she has to put up with her husband Onslow. Hyacinth's father is a womanizer and perhaps more than a bit crazy. He has been known to be seen out riding a bicycle naked and chasing a woman down the street.

Violet is wealthy and married to a rich man but her marriage is an unhappy one. Her husband has some real issues in the cross dressing side of life. Hyacinth thinks of her family as a black sheep family and tries to defend and hide them from the public and her friends. She is proud that Violet is rich and she likes that she, at least, has a small link to the wealthy. Poor Richard Bucket is Hyacinth's husband and he has the patience of Job. He makes a good counterbalance to Hyacinth.

What is funny is that every time Hyacinth sets up a plan to rub elbows with the elite or plans a special event her misfit family shows up and ruins it for her. It is hilarious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hyacinth's hots just keep on coming! October 22, 2000
Format:VHS Tape
Yet another 'Keeping up appearances' gem to add to my library. Three classic episodes, Violets country cottage, Driving Mrs. Fortescue, Country estate sale. You've heard about Hyacinth's sister with "room for a pony", now you get to see Violet's estate when Hyacinth borrows her house for an indoor/outdoor BBQ. This is one of my all time favorite episodes and I was so happy to find it in this collection.
Driving Mrs. Fortescue shows the only scenes of Hyacinth in a pub! Not the kind of place one would expect to be found when you are active in higher social circles.
The County estate episode was not one of my favorite episodes until I happened to watch it a few more times on this tape and I began to notice discreet incidences which had me in tears of laughter.
If you are a Keeping up appearances fan, this tape is a must for your collection.

Having watched this BritCom perennial year after year on PBS, I am amazed at the quality of the picture in this new restored set. All my favorite moments look brand new -- the "riparian" outing in which Hyacinth inadvertantly entertained all her friends, Daddy running amok in the toy store, Daisy's toy boy (who was Jonny Lee Miller!) I can't wait to plant the seed packets that came with the set, and see which character grows the best! This makes a great gift, because in everyone's life, there's a Hyacinth Bucket.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh out Loud hysterical! December 5, 2013
Format:DVD
WOW is all I have to say - I don't normally go for these types of shows but a girlfriend recommended it and when it comes to binge watching, well this is the set to do it with - I couldn't stop laughing! Also, I must say that the bonus features are a great addition once you have finished the series and want just a little bit more and the packaging was soo adorable, I can't wait for winter to be over so that I can start planting my seeds, I am not sure if every package is the same but I got flowers - Violets, Daisy and Roses - if you need an idea for a great gift of laughter well this is IT! Enjoy everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Set! February 27, 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This is a great set of videos. It shows Hyacinth at her best. British comedies are 100% better than American comedies. My favorite episode is Hyacinth's outdoor waterside supper with riperian entertainments. It will leave you in stitches. Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best gift for the holidays December 5, 2013
Format:DVD
I just got this box set for my grandmother. She is such a big fan of the show and I can’t wait to give it to her for Christmas. The packaging is fabulous and adorable. And with so many bonus features that are exclusive to the set, I know that she will be thrilled! Thanks BBC Home Entertainment this is definitely going to be one of her favorite gifts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! February 11, 2002
Format:VHS Tape
This video contains 3 entertaining installments from the successful British comedy "Keeping Up Appearances". For those who are not too familiar with the series, "Keeping Up Appearances" is about Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced bouquet) and her attempts to climb the social ladder at any cost. She tries her best to reach the top of the social strata but always seems to stumble, usually with a little help from her poor but down to earth relatives and their problems. In "How To Retire Early If You're Not Careful", Hyacinth begins to plan how she and her husband Richard will spend their time together now that he's retired. Instead of fun and relaxing hobbies, Hyacinth drags Richard out to look for relics of a lost civilization. Later on she has to intervene when her younger and melodramatic sister Rose begins to behave strangely. In "How To Go On Holiday Without Really Trying" Hyacinth schemes to impress her neighbors and friends by creating the illusion that she and Richard are going on an expensive luxury cruise. Finally, in "What To Wear When Yachting" Hyacinth and Richard get the opportunity to spend the weekend aboard a yacht where Hyacinth plans an elaborate buffet for her friends and family. Of course seeing as neither of them have had any experience with yachts, there's bound to be a hilarious disaster. This is a great collection of three of the funniest episodes from this hilarious comedy. It's also a fun place to start if you're just discovering this British comedy. Patricia Routledge is terrific as Hyacinth Bucket and Clive Swift is perfect as Hyacinth's long-suffering husband Richard. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
