More laughs!,
By Robert Ortiz (The Southwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Keeping Up Appearances - Giftset 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This VHS collection contains 12 entertaining installments from the successful British comedy "Keeping Up Appearances". For those who are not too familiar with the series, "Keeping Up Appearances" is about Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced bouquet) and her attempts to climb the social ladder at any cost. She tries her best to reach the top of the social strata but always seems to stumble, usually with a little help from her poor but down to earth relatives and their problems. Some of the best episodes are "Violet's Country Cottage", "Driving Mrs. Fortescue" and "Seaside Fun". In "Violet's Country Cottage" Hyacinth borrows her sister's country cottage and plans a fancy barbecue for a select group of friends. As usual a series of comic mishaps occur, including the search for a lost dog, an eccentric married couple and alcohol consumption that alter her best laid plans. Royce Mills guest stars. In "Driving Mrs. Fortescue", Hyacinth has an opportunity to drive an upper class elderly lady into town. A comedy of errors occurs that makes that ride a little bumpy for Hyacinth. In "Seaside Fun" Hyacinth volunteers to accompany a group of elderly people to a seaside amusement park for a day of fun. Needless to say, she doesn't exactly have the time of her life. She ends up having to keep watch over a woman with car sickness and fend off the advances of an elderly but energetic Italian man all while trying not to be seen by some influential people that are spending the day there. This is a great collection of episodes from this hilarious comedy. Patricia Routledge is great as Hyacinth Bucket and Clive Swift is perfect as Hyacinth's long-suffering husband Richard. Also stars Josephine Tewson as Hyacinth's friend and neighbor Elizabeth who always seems to spill things when in Hyacinth's house (who could blame her for her frazzled nerves?) If you're just discovering this series you might want to start with a smaller collection of episodes first to see if you like it. "Born to Rule" contains 3 episodes and is a good introduction to the series as is "How to Enhance Your Husband's Retirement" and "I'm Often Mistaken For Aristocracy". Enjoy!

Keeping Up Appearances: Giftset 2,

If you love to laugh, you will love these videos! Very English, it's a collection of the wildly popular TV Series about Hyacinth Bucket (she insists it's prounounced "Bouquet") and her attempts at social climbing. Her family, neighbors, friends, and the nervous mailman become part of her adventures in spite of themselves. My parents first saw these on a cruise, and have been fans ever since. They say they need their "Hyacinth Fix" daily! Fun to watch over and over - the characters become like family. I am purchasing both sets for my Inlaws.
