5.0 out of 5 stars A must read book for safety, December 17, 2009
This review is from: Keeping Your Family Safe: The Responsibilities of Firearm Ownership (Paperback)
This book is excellent... it really helped me in deciding how to properly store the guns in our house...and talks about the advantages and disadvantages of keeping it loaded for self defense. It provides a lot of information that I can use now, and also teaches my children. The chapter on emergency first aid is awesome...gives a detailed list of exactly what modern combat gauze dressings and tourniquets to buy, and where to buy them. I also learned a cool fact...what is the number one sign that you are about to attacked by a criminal?

Definitely buy this book..the authors are experienced and know what they are talking about. One author is a triple trained expert...a emergency physician, soldier, and law enforecement officer...who has been involved in over 100 SWAT callouts. And he is qualified EXPERT in all the major gun types. I'm very happy I bought this...very useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!, December 16, 2009

This review is from: Keeping Your Family Safe: The Responsibilities of Firearm Ownership (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I've read about self defense and personal safety. The book covers a 9-step process that teaches about firearms, how and where to get the proper firearm training, and what the key parts of that training consists of to become a good shot. Most importantly it taught me the basics of gun safety and self-defense.

The First Aid chapter is excellent... it has a list of detailed medical supplies to make a home first aid kit in case a family member is hurt. I found the Children and Firearms chapter very helpful and so very important.

This book is especially interesting and different because it was authored by two medical doctors. You can tell the authors are experts not only in their medical professions, but also with guns. One author is an emergency doctor who works at a level One trauma center, is a University of Illinois College of Medicine Associate Professor, and has been a law enforcement officer for over 15 years and has also been a soldier for 14 years... I'd definitely trust what he has to say... especially since he has been involved in over 100 SWAT callouts. What they have written in the book makes PERFECT SENSE and I'm glad I bought it.

My nieces and nephews will now be safe when they come to visit... Thanks to this book, I now feel confident in how I store my gun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guide to Guns and Security by 2 MD's, January 28, 2010

This review is from: Keeping Your Family Safe: The Responsibilities of Firearm Ownership (Paperback)
It is rare to find medical doctors in Boston who do not share the political bias against guns which is so prevalent in the Northeast. The authors of "Keeping Your Family Safe" are the outstanding exception. While at only 132 pages the book is concise, in its 11 chapters it covers the subject of firearm ownership in all aspects: practical, factual, political and life saving first aid. Chapter 7: Firearms Training includes contact information for the top firearms training schools in the country, run by professionals, offering courses for beginners as well as experts. Doctors Wheeler and Wipfler have done their homework extremely well: Chapter 11: Learning Safety for Life is dedicated to suggestions for further reading for those who want to know more on this important and often emotionally loaded subject. If the question comes up, "Should I buy this book?" the correct answer is "Yes, absolutely." Two further books, not currently listed but important are 1) Street Smarts, Firearms and Personal Security by Grover, and 2) Strong on Defense by Sanford Strong. This last book is currently out of print but well worth the effort needed to find a used copy.

This review is from: Keeping Your Family Safe: The Responsibilities of Firearm Ownership (Paperback)
This book is a must for anyone considering having a gun of any type in their home for self defense. It clearly outlines the absolute need for the personal defense of your family and how to accomplish that goal safely. The authors are both firearms and medical experts and they demonstrate that family self defense and family safety are mandatory responsibilities that go hand in hand. Read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Staying Safe, December 2, 2009
This review is from: Keeping Your Family Safe: The Responsibilities of Firearm Ownership (Paperback)
Over half of U.S. home owners are gun owners. And an increasing number of citizens are considering gun ownership. They know it's their right, not only for hunting and target shooting but also for self-defense. Firearms are the safest and most effective means of defending yourself and your family.

Keeping Your Family Safe-The Responsibilities of Firearm Ownership is an accurate and concise explanation of how gun ownership is safe for the owner and family - and how to keep it that way. Whether new to guns or seasoned old hand, you will find clear guidelines and tips on how to stay safe.

Drs Wheeler and Wipfler briefly explain the mechanics and types of firearms and extensively discuss firearm safety. They discuss proper training, storage and maintenance. They include an important chapter on the ethics and laws of self-defense. There is an introduction to the fundamentals of self-defense tactics. The doctors also have a chapter on a subject frequently neglected in books about firearms: First Aid for Gun Shot Wounds and other trauma. All this is done in a clear easy to read style, punctuated with photos that speak more than a thousand words.

The chapter on how to "gun proof" your kids is especially important to me. Kids will not always be in your safely managed home under your supervision. Kids who are taught how to handle and use firearms don't get into trouble. They develop a special bond with Moms or Dads who teach them and it keeps them out of all sorts of trouble - not just with guns.

All gun owners, and those contemplating ownership, should read and pay close attention to keeping Your Family Safe -The Responsibilities

A small book packed with a lot of information. A must read for all families regardless of your personal opinions on firearms. My wife, who did not want my weapons in our home, read it and now has a better understanding of firearms and firearm safety. She even recommended it to several of her friends. Kudos to Dr. Wheeler and Dr. Wipfler!

5.0 out of 5 stars What Every American Needs to Know, May 19, 2010

This review is from: Keeping Your Family Safe: The Responsibilities of Firearm Ownership (Paperback)
Dr.s Wheeler and Wipfler have taken the topic of gun ownership and created a concise readable guide to responsible ownership of firearms. Using practical and reasoned discussion, the doctors have disarmed all the arguments that many in the antigun community use to promote their agenda. This book was written for Americans by two good Americans who clearly understand the first two rights in the U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights.
Any police officer will tell you they respond to crimes committed and as outlined in the doctor's book--only by being prepared to protect yourself and family will you be able to explain to the police the true situation. By discussing the truth about firearm ownership, the types of firearms, the responsibility of ownership, the laws and ethics about their use, how to be trained in their use and tactics on how to protect yourself and your family the authors make the practical aspects of gun ownership understandable.
Every current gun owner and future gun owner should read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Own, May 2, 2010

I am the Owner/Operator/Chief Firearms Instructor of firearms-training company and am constantly searching for reliable, accurate information for my students. Dr. Wheeler & Dr. Wipfler have written a great 'basic text'. Unlike many authors who cite common-knowledge then digress into opinion, these authors stick to the facts. Any 2nd Ammendment advocate must also applaud the fact that two MDs would even author such a text. Nothing new here, but full of great advice for the 'new-gun-owner' or the spouse worried about how to keep the kids safe around her husbands' firearms.

5.0 out of 5 stars More emphasis on family protection than medical advice, June 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Keeping Your Family Safe: The Responsibilities of Firearm Ownership (Paperback)
I thought this book would have an emphasis on medical advice for gunshot wounds, however, this is only one chapter of the book. Overall, it covers all aspects of family safety from safe gun ownership through use of force. A good honest treatment of the subjects. A good book over all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for owning something so DEADLY, June 21, 2010
This review is from: Keeping Your Family Safe: The Responsibilities of Firearm Ownership (Paperback)
When I came across this book, I had to get something like this with kids in my life (I'm an uncle and my girlfriend has 2 kids as well) and I now own my very first firearm. I own a Mossberg 590 pump action 12 gauge shotgun for home protection and after I fired my first 3 inch magnum shell with 00 buckshot, I could tell that this was VERY IMPORTANT reading material. To give you an idea of how deadly a firearm can be, stick piece of sheet paper up on a tree off of a logging road in the mountains and fire one round at it from about 10-15 yards away with a 12 gauge chambered for 3 inch magnums. Not only did I see the flash of the buckshot as they came out of my gun but when I shot it just once, there was a hole in the paper the size of a dinner plate that was completely blown open!!!! Guns are VERY VERY dangerous and if you are not a responsible safety minded gun owner, they can be deadly if an inexperienced person or a child gets ahold of it... If you are a gun owning parent I strong urge you to keep your firearms LOCKED UP either with a trigger or a cable lock and also keep the ammuntion stored seperately in a LOCKABLE container that only you have access too and lock it. I am very glad that I own a firearm with how bad crime is getting now and if it came down to it where someone was in my apartment armed with a gun, they better be bolting their ass for my door when I rack the slide or they will be leaving in a bodybag. Nobody ever wants to have to use deadly force but if somebody is intent on killing me or my family, I would use my firearm in a heartbeat if it meant protecting a member of my family.
