A nice sampler for new listeners,
By rmcrae (Houston, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits (Audio CD)
Keeps Gettin' Better isn't meant to be a greatest hits collection. Rather it's a chronological runthrough of some of Christina's biggest hits and her evolution as an artist over the past decade. All 4 singles from her debut are featured (Genie In A Bottle, What A Girl Wants, I Turn To You, and Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)) with only 3 from Stripped (Dirrty, Beautiful, and Fighter) and Back To Basics (Ain't No Other Man, Hurt, and Candyman). She flips the script on 2 of her biggest staples. Genie 2.0 is a techno inflected makeover of the original and the self love anthem Beautiful transforms into an icy slice of electronica. The new tracks Keeps Gettin' Better and Dynamite preview the futuristic electropop of her upcoming disc Bionic. Casual listeners and hardcore fans, enjoy. Everybody else need not apply.

The first greatest hits compilation of a living legend,

Now to some people it may seem slightly early for Ms. Aguilera to be releasing a greatest hits collection after just 3 mainstream studio albums, but this special ten year career anniversary collection definitely does a very good job in bringing together & highlighting some of Christina's trademark & in some cases iconic songs, the tracklisting for the album runs in chronological order to the hits from her 1999 debut Christina Aguilera, then to the sophomore release Stripped & finally to her 2006 retro influenced album Back to Basics and there are 4 new songs, 2 being different & fresh renditions of the original back catalogue material & the other two being compleatly new such as `Dynamite' & the electro-pop influenced single `Keeps getting better'. overall it is a smashing hits collection from living legend Christina Aguilera & just to add very fond of the album artwork and the booklet which includes futuristic pics of christina!! here comes the new decade of hits!!

A Good Retrospective From Xtina,

This review is from: Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits (Audio CD)
Despite the omission of the beautiful ballad "The Voice Within," all of the biggest solo hits from Christina Aguilera are contained in chronological order on this disc. Missing, however, is the 2001 smash "Lady Marmalade" because it was part of a movie soundtrack.
As for the songs on this collection, the wonderful pop singles "Genie in a Bottle" and "Beautiful" are worth the album's price alone, as they are two of the finest pop songs of the last decade or so. There are other ballads, "Hurt" and "I Turn to You" which are not to be overlooked. The 2006 smash hit "Ain't No Other Man" and the marvelous "Candyman" are also included here. There are also two new songs, "Keeps Gettin' Better" and "Dynamite" which both kind of have an electro vibe to them, kind of like Goldfrapp meets Madonna. To her credit, the songs sound like legitimate hits and not just filler. There is also a new version of "Genie" which is just okay. But overall, this is a fine collection from one of the greatest and most recognizable voices of our time.

I love this album, a splendid collection of strong hits. I admire this album's superhero theme and futuristic sound. My favorite track is Dynamite, this was such an exciting time to experience Christina's innovation.

Since you all know the songs in this album, except for the newer tracks in the end, I am going to make this as concise as possible and only talk about the newer tracks.
Genie 2.0 - Fantastic version of Genie In A Bottle. Love the arrangement, and I love Christina's maturer voice several years after releasing the first version of this song. I was hooked on the song when it was released, and I still play it from time to time because it's awesome. Dynamite - Fantastic song. Love the rhythm and the music. Love the lyrics. Christina is dynamite. You Are What You Are (Beautiful) - This new version of the song "Beautiful", rather than getting you all melancholic and making you remember all the times you've been rejected just because of who you are, it gives you goosebumps, like the score of a horror movie. But it's AWESOME!! The only thing that disappointed me about this "Greatest Hits" album is that they omitted "Can't Hold Us Down" and I don't know why because it's a wonderful song and it deserved to be on the album because it was indeed one of her greatest hits. It is the anthem of us women around the world. GO CHRISTINA!!

Decent Pop from a very good Voice,

Now that she's jumped to a bigger stardom than she probably ever imagined "The Voice" would bring her, Christina Agulara now has a full media press where her music is concerned. This compilation does her some justice, as it's about 2/3rds a decent listen. It does not include any songs from "Bionic," released after this was issues, but covers the first three albums (her debut, "Stripped" and "Back to Basics.") It also leaves of her collaborative "Lady Marmalade" from the movie "Moulin Rogue."
I'd always viewed Christina as a radio creation, and this best of does little to dispel that notion. Both "Genie In A Bottle" and "What a Girl Wants" are decent earworms, with killer hooks and Christna's rich singing. But like so many of the Disney Kid-Singer grads, she tends to really over-sing. It comes to the fore in the songs from her second album, "Stripped." "Dirrty" is an obvious attempt to break from the teen-boom image but can't be called anything but an annoyingly dated song, complete with "who let the dogs out" faux 'barking.' Fortunately, she had the song "Beautiful" up her sleeve, a stunning anthem of a ballad that, over-sung or not, offered proof that she wanted to do more than sing psuedo-soul pop singles. That ambition was confirmed when she dropped the double disc "Back to Basics." In turns playful, forceful and ambitious, Christina jumps from the Big-Band swing of "Candyman" to the brassy "Ain't No Other Man." While the likes of Britany Spears was grabbing the headlines, Christina was proving she had some serious chops. The new "Keeps Getting Better" is the best of the two wholly new songs, a sharp bit of girl-pop that works its way under your skin like the best of the rest of her singles. However, the revamped versions of "Genie" and "Beautiful" are mere filler, an indication that she could have waited until after "Bionic" (even if it was something of a commercial dud) to get to the compilation point of her first decade.

I was taken in by the singers awesome voice and range when hearing her for the first time in the movie " Burlesque" to the point that as soon as movie ended I came to Amazon to look for some of her music. This "keeps gettin better, stripped, and back to basics",are a complete let down; her fans apparently think that her "white rap" and other crap that she sings is good enough. what a waste of a marvelous voice; I shan't add to her income with any more purchases of her music, as long as it stays in the arena that she has selected-CD's in the trash.

She releases three albums and then decides it's time for a greatest hits compilation? Who the hell is she trying to kid?
This should have been called "Keeps Gettin' Worse: A Decade of Flops." |
