I wish whoever bought this & threw it away as a "stick" would have given it to me! Some plants, shrubs, trees, you name it, need time to shed their ugly duckling status. I ordered a Keith Davey pistache from Amazon last year, and yes, it did look pretty much like a large, thick stick when it arrived but in my experience, this is not uncommon with mail order trees. It is in the best interest of the tree to be shipped dormant and/or pruned back to avoid trauma during transport. My pistache ended up with some interesting fall foliage its first year & withstood several efforts by my dogs to dig it up, so I let it hang around. This spring it was slow to bud out, but that is always true for this type of tree. And yes, I had a moment of wow, it still looks like a big stick! But I did some more research on it and realized that it is a tree that will be especially gawky in its first couple years, but then develops beautifully. It is now a couple weeks later, it has leafed out tremendously & seems very happy in our Georgia sun & clay. The old gardening adage of "first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap" has proven to be true for me so many times. Sometimes it is hard for me to be patient for three years, but with many plants, there is no replacement for time. You can always remove the plant later, but if you can give it three years, you may be richly rewarded. A couple years ago, I also ordered a downy serviceberry tree from the Arbor Day Foundation, and it was truly a short, thin, reedy stick no more than three feet tall. It is now a lovely, happy understory tree about six feet tall and I cannot wait to see what it & the pistache will look like next year as they grow & develop.

I specifically wanted a Kieth Davey since I am leery of trashy trees that leave acorns, berries, or worse sweetgum balls all over my lawn. I'm not anti trashy trees I just want low maintenance based on my lawn care apathy.

The tree arrived in a large box that has been designed to ship trees it has a cardboard circle and plastic bag keeping the soil moist and in contact with the roots. Also it has spacers to keep the trunk centered. Also has instructions to remove immediately and water thoroughly to removed air pockets in the roots.

The tree was tied to the stake very tightly and I quickly cut them but the bark had slight rub damage.

Wish they had real picture of how it comes. It comes "topped" which I this is the right term for all foliage removed and cut down to first branch. But no worries it soon budded and now has plumage.

I can't say enough good things about the packaging. My plant upon arrival was alive but consisted of nothing more than a stick with several buds on the trunk. There was planting instructions included but not specific to my variety of tree. I took great care in preparing and planting my tree when it arrived but it died within a month.

In fairness to the shipper it is my understanding that this variety does not take to shipping very well and I did order at the end of the season. Also I live in AZ and the spring was pretty hot which could have contributed to it's demise.

I really want a Keith Davey pistache but not sure I could stomach the money for another stick to die. Not to mention the amount of s**** I got from my wife and family over the stick I planted, they are still laughing at me over this one.

I did get the impression from Clifton's Nursery that they are a high quality nursery that takes pride in their products, which showed in the great care they took in packing my tree.

I also did not contact Clifton's about my purchase and the death of my tree. I would not hesitate to order from Clifton's again.
