This review is from: The Keith Ingham New York 9, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
I'm kinda surprised that nobody's tackled any of the NY9 volumes yet. The first two volumes have been out for over a decade now. The third volume came a few years later. All three are outstanding examples of small group swing, combining an excellent arrangers touch(Keith Ingham)with eloquent solo statements(Ken Peplowski, Dan Barrett, Randy Reinhart, James Chirillo, Scott Robinson, Keith Ingham a.o.). The songs are from the golden age of jazz and most of them are not familiar overworked chestnuts. There is a polish and excitement to the playing that is infectious and envigorating. The music is a slightly more arranged version of Condon's freewheeling sound, yet it will still raise your pulse a notch or two.

Everyone sounds like they were having a ball making these sides. There are many standout moments on each volume. Scott Robinson's reeds, Randy Reinhart's trombone/cornet, Dan Barrett's silky smooth trombone, and the excellent rhythm section anchored by Greg Cohen's bass are just a few of the treats you'll hear. The studio engineering is superb. The packaging and liner notes are excellent. This volume and the other two are worthwhile investments for those who liked the Ellington/Strayhorn small groups from the 30's and 40's or had a yen for anything Eddie Condon ever did.
