5.0 out of 5 stars A great album
What can you say about a great artist such as Keith Whitley? From his beginnings as an outstanding bluegrass guitarist (and singer) with Ricky Skaggs to his move into the traditional country sound of the 80's, Keith's voice was simply fantastic. It seemed many of the neo-traditionalists of the 80's (ie George Strait and Randy Travis) relied heavily on the voice of Lefty...

It seemed many of the neo-traditionalists of the 80's (ie George Strait and Randy Travis) relied heavily on the voice of Lefty Frizzel; Keith was the next step of Lefty Frizzel....the continuation of Lefty's sound. This album is very well recorded and the sound is superb; you can almost smell the whiskey and feel the heartache in every song. This is what country music is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be mandatory songs on Country stations today, June 30, 2004
This review is from: Keith Whitley - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I heard a radio dj-not too long ago- say on the air that whenever he played a Keith Whitley song that several listeners would call in and ask who the artist was. Today's Country radio stations are doing a disservice to their listeners by not putting all of Keith Whitleys top 10 and #1 hits (he had 5 #1's) in a semi-constant rotation on their play list. Classics like "I'm Over You","It Ain't Nothin","I'm No Stranger To The Rain","I Wonder Do You Think Of Me","Don't Close Your Eyes",and "When You Say Nothing At All" all hit the top 10 and should not be strangers to today's Country radio and that's regardless of what some consultant says or what testing and research reflects. I implore today's Country stations to play these songs on the air today and watch your arb's increase and watch your phones light up. Keith was truly a magnificent singer and these songs were very well crafted and fit in very well with today's Country music.

I discovered Keith Whitley's musicshortly before his death.I went to his concert at The Circle D night club in El Cajon, Ca.I bought his cassette Don't close your eyes, and Keith signed it.I fell in love with him and his music that night! It hit me hard hearing of Keith's death. I at times cry when I listen to this cassette.Keith left us with his heart and soul in his music. I will cherish his music forever.I recommend everything he did.Never has a musician touched me as Keith! My fav song is "When you say nothing at all".Keith you are grestly missed.God Bless You!

One of the best country records out there to date over the years rca has tried to release Keith Whitley albums of the material that he cut over the years until his death in 1989 but no Keith Whitley collection has come close to this one. Every song is memorable and some of the best country music ever sung is on the 10 track cd. Buy it and own a piece of great music. Buy it NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars no stranger to the pain, November 3, 1998
By
This review is from: Keith Whitley - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
keiths voice captured my attention sometime back in 1988. his rich, strong vocals, brought songs like "dont close your eyes" and "im no stranger to the rain" right to the top of my list, and as loud as I could on my radio. "when you say nothing at all" my favorite of keiths songs still grabs me. very listenable, and very timely, these songs stay with you, and as well they should, keith seems to be singing to us, at least thats the way I like to think. thanks keith..

5.0 out of 5 stars Keith Whitley is one of country music's best., October 21, 1998

If you're an avid country music fan and are knowledgeable of the Keith Whitley story, you will be mesmerized by this CD. I own this and will play it on repeat for hours at a time. Keith's rich voice and touching lyrics get me all choked up as I listen to him. He also reminds me to hang on to every day as it may be your last.

I love Keith Whitley. There is no better singer in the world, and I think that is because he sung his songs from the heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless and pure country, March 26, 1999
This review is from: Keith Whitley - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Keith Whitley's was a painful existence. Ironically, the sadness that is echoed in every vocal and lyric is exactly what makes this collection so beautiful and sweet. Keith had a gift, and this gift was passed on to anyone who chooses to listen to this collection. Listen to it in the dark when you're all alone. Listen to it on a rainy night. But please, just listen to it. I can't say anything more that might do justice to this man's best work, except maybe thanks, Keith, and God bless you.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Keith Whitley - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Good CD, but in my opinion skip this CD and get the essential instead. It has some of Keith's hits that I love the most including "Hard Livin" and "Homecoming".
