It works great for boiling water. Depending on the type of fuel you're using, it can boil the full volume of water in about 7 or 8 minutes. It seems to work best with actively burning fuel (anything that's actively emitting flame), smoldering coals don't seem to heat as quickly as little twigs and branches... Though I should note that I live in AZ and most of the small brush available as fuel here is extremely high in oil and very dry so it burns hotter and a bit longer than a similar volume of wood might in wetter areas. You're mileage may vary.
I've never tried cooking above it, so I can't comment on its utility as a "stove".
That all having been said, if you're not careful and you happen to forget to empty the kettle, as you might if you're using it as an additional water container and happen to leave it in the trunk of your car for a couple weeks after filing it while hiking/camping...You're likely to find that the rivets have corroded and left a nice milky residue of aluminum oxide all over the inside of the kettle. When you try to remove the corrosion you may find that the rivets leak. And if you try to remove the scum inside the kettle with vinegar you may get lucky enough to have the rivets completely dissolve, pop out, and spill boiling vinegar all over your stove. You'll have a really clean stove top...but your house will stink for a while.
At the end of the day it was a really poor or perhaps lazy decision by the manufacturer to use aluminum pop rivets in a stainless steel container. My guess is that they make the steel unit on the same line they make the aluminum one on and never thought about galvanic corrosion.Read more ›
The water starts boiling in only a few minutes with just feeding small sticks into the burner. I got the complete kit with the cooking grate and pot. The top cooking works good too, but you have to remove the pot from the top frequently to keep feeding fuel down the "stack". I guess you could use a bit bigger sticks to keep the fuel from burning up quickly.
In reality though, you only need a few minutes of fire to get liquids boiling, and soup heated....so it isn't a big problem.
Not concerning myself with gas for this cooker is a big thing for me, as I am somewhat of a minimalist.
It is the coolest bit of camping equipment I have used in a long time!
When I emailed Kelly Kettle, they informed me it was not supposed to be water tight at the top of the kettle mouth (the chimney), but that it was supposed to be water tight around the water jacket mouth. They promptly sent me a new kettle which was water tight around the water jacket mouth, and made arrangements with Fed-Ex to pickup the other kettle, I only needed to pack it in the original box and leave it outside, Fed-Ex would put the label on it and return it. No charge to me. Great customer service.
The kettle is well made and really does boil water quickly. Be picky about what you burn in it though, the inside of the chimney quickly builds up a tarry stuff. Use clean burning fuel that puts out as little smoke as possible. The chimney has fairly larger space that cans of sterno could be stored in, if you really wanted to minimize cleanup.......
