Product Description

Highly utilitarian, the Redwing has all the features and organization needed for simplified travel or an overnight on the trail. Full-access U-zipper, the Redwing works both as top loader and a panel loader, depending on whether you have the top compression straps clipped or not, adding convenience to any adventure. Organization is the name of the game for the Redwing with zippered side pockets, zippered stash pocket, large front pocket with organization for small items, and the large pocket on the top of the pack. You'll also stay hydrated for any adventure with the hydration compatible design and the water bottle pockets on the side. When you are on the go, the carry handle makes it easy to grab your pack out of where you've stowed it for your trip. Finally, the Redwing suspension is designed for all day carry comfort. The load is kept off your shoulders and support is provided with the Light Beam(tm) single aluminum stay and HDPE frame sheet. The dynamic Airflow back panel and Air Mesh on the shoulder straps, dual density foam waist belt, and lumbar pad will keep you cool when you are working hard. Finally, the load lifters/stabilizers, hip belt stabilizer straps, sternum straps, and waist buckle will help customize the fit and keep the load close to your center of gravity.

Customer Reviews

It seems well made, and it very comfortable.

I really like the fact that the entire face of the bag zips opens, so you can reach stuff at the bottom of bag.
Arjun
Was large enough to fit everything I needed...other than my surfboard...but small enough to carry on.

I just wanted to clear up any confusion anyone may have regarding the Hip-Belt. The Hip-belt is removable on the 2013 model. Some people have incorrectly stated that only the 2012 and older models had this feature.

In order to remove the hip belt, you must first remove the aluminum stay (bar), which can be accessed via the main compartment by pulling back the Velcro at the top.

I am a 63 year old woman and carried this pack for six weeks to Asia with pretty much everything I needed....I also had a small day pack that doubled as my purse! Granted I am a light packer and take only what I need. The Kelty Redwing 44 is a comfortable pack and easy to sling on your back. I was hoping it would be small enough that I could use it as a carry-on but it was a little too big for that on the airline that I flew.

Hey all -

I have a Kelty Redwing 50 which is obnoxiously large for car camping. I wanted one a bit smaller though not too much smaller, to tote all my clothes in as well as a journal, maybe a book, my kindle, my phone, some medication, etc. It can also be emptied out into my tent and used mainly for hiking elsewhere (carrying the necessary items for a long day hike for a family of 5) if need be. The Redwing 50 would be too large for that. But anything smaller than the 44 would be too small as I barely fit my clothes in it for a 3-day camping trip (I pack a lot to be on the safe side - and that's just for my clothes alone including sleeping and swimming attire). I also want to know I'll have a good size should I want to take it to Europe. Again the 50 would be too big for that (would hurt my back) and the 40 seems too small. I've read the 44 will go in the overhead area in planes.

I specifically LOVE this blue color. They seem to have discovered the perfect blue that will make both males and females happy. I thought it would be too much of a "boy blue" but not so at all. At the same time I think it's *just* dark enough/masculine enough of a blue to make most men happy. Sorry for the stereotypes.

I almost didn't get this pack because of the complaints people had about losing the 1 or 2 small pockets that zip up (compared to the 2012 model) and the fact that the belt can no longer supposedly be removed (forgot to try), however in a pack this size, the waist belt feels appropriate just hanging out there. I just slung it over one shoulder anyway as I was just toting my clothing from car to tent and the belt ends didn't feel crazy awkward, sticking out a bit as I walked. Who cares - not a deal-breaker for how great the pack is in other ways.

This pack is awesome! I use it as my daily bag, it’s a little on the big side, but its not heavy and it still looks good when it’s kinda on the empty side, and during the winter it will hold any jacket I own, along with food and drink. It has tons of pockets to keep just about anything you’d need. It seems well made, and it very comfortable. I really like that you can take the waist belt off, I took mine of since I use it daily, it been great.

Been using it daily for three months now.

Great Pack!

Pros:
Top and front loading (really easy to pack and unpack)
Front handle for carrying like a normal bag
Side water pouches and top and side pockets for easy access
Very comfortable carrying all day
Fits everything I could want for a backpacking trip (5-10 days)

Cons:
Zippers are NOT lockable (common Kelty!!)
Waist strap is not removable (see Tips for useful hack)

Tips:
When not using the waist belt, loop the straps around the back of the pack and clasp it through the "hammer" loop
To make the front pocket harder to open (so someone doesn't sneak up behind you and steal stuff out of it): use a carabiner and loop through the 2 zipper strings and the front handle

This backpack worked well for my 3 week trip to Italy. It fit the carry-on requirements for the airline. This and a small day-pack handled everything I needed. Aside from the fact that there's no need to check baggage and wait around for your luggage to get spit out on the carousel after your flight, backpacks are much easier to manage then wheeled luggage when moving on foot - especially on stairs and uneven surfaces.

This Kelty 44 was fairly comfortable with lots of space in the main compartment and many smaller pockets for better organization - socks, underwear, t-shirts,etc. Zippers and compression straps all worked well. Waste belt and chest-strap were satisfactory for short term moderate conditions. The handle on the outside of the front compartment is a handy feature.

I'm not sure it would be rugged enough for longer term camping conditions but it worked well for routine travel!

I bought this backpack as a gift, but personally I own the 2012 50-liter version of this backpack. Actually this one is even better! First off, this backpack is awesome. Plenty of pockets and space for everything. It is a very well thought out design, so much better than others I've seen. To start, the hip clip and the back support bar are removable. This is a key that so many other bags do not have. I don't like the hip clip when I'm carrying a light load, and the support bars can complicate wearing a large hat or a helmet. Not a problem for this bag, I can interchange the parts I need for the adventure at hand. Smart pockets for all your items, handles to grab where you need them, smooth tie down straps, a chest strap, this bag has it all. What makes this bag better than my 50L is the top loading zipper design. The older one has a normal zipper. This was perfect for my friend who needed a backpack he could stick his tennis rackets in, or anything longer that never seems to fit in a backpack. Also the 44 is a little smaller than the 50 which can be a bit bulky. All in all, you can't go wrong with either backpack. My 50 has all but retired my 90 for all my backpacking needs, except for those longer multi-week excursions into the wilderness. Every time I take this thing to the supermarket they ask, 'Are you sure all this is going to fit in there?' And it does. That's how big and bad this bag is.
