Great backpack, but shoulder strap stitching weak,

Purchased this as a multipurpose travel and light hiking backpack. The main compartment is huge and can carry a surprising amount of stuff. The zippers can be somewhat difficult to zip up due to fabric overlap ( overlap is a great feature to keep out rain). Straps are everywhere you want them to be, and the backpack fits under airline seats when lightly packed.
The stitching attaching the shoulder strap adjustment buckle to the shoulder cushion is a weak point. The stitching unraveled after about a week of light use. I looped the broken strap back through the adjustment buckle as an interim fix, which renders further strap adjustment impossible. Kelty should have added much more stitching to this area. If you're going to buy a 2650, I would advise you to check the stitching right above the shoulder buckle and reinforce the area as necessary.

Got this backpack for a trip I was taking to Puerto Rico and several other islands in the carribean. I used it for about 8hrs a day and the straps never hurt even with a sunburn on my shoulders. It held all my gear plus stuff we bought at every port, great pack and highly recommended!

This is my second kelty pack, I have a Kelty Coyote 4750 and now this Kelty Redwing. Excellent packs, i bought the redwing since the Coyote was way to large for a two day hike. The Redwing is able to hold my sleeping bag, two person tent, rainjacket, clothing, water (bladder and three water bottles), food, knives, etc. It's perfect for a 1-3 day hike depending on how light you're willing to pack.
I'm 5'7" 175lbs and it fits perfectly on my body. The pack has a decent amount of straps to make it snug. I know someone had mentioned that the waist buckle seemed useless, i disagree. Both the shoulder straps and waist straps are able to take any weight and pressure. The quality of the seams and stitching so far seem to be good just like my Coyote 4750 - this is why I like Kelty, it's quality built. The pack has plenty of small compartments and loops to carry any extra stuff on the outside of the pack. The padding for the upper and lower back is excellent, along with the one peice of metal for the frame, it's solid. I got the blood red - I'm happy with the color, it's exactly what i expected. I definitely recommend this pack for a short couple day hike Con: I personally like when companies put the small pouches on the waist straps for a camera or snacks - this pack doesn't have that, but it's not that big of a deal.

This pack deserves five stars for comfort. First time out for a short three hour uphill hike locally, very comfortable! With all of the heavy duty padded straps, the pack handled the weight perfectly on the hip bones,This pack does have a pocket for a hydration bladder along with a drink tube port but i havent added that yet, however with 3 litres of fluid on board plus lite gear i hardly felt it. I added carabiners to the multiple gear loops all over and with web pockets, its easy to access quick draw items such as camera, waterbottle, knife etc. I know i could have heavily loaded this pack and felt at ease on a long hike! A good pack should let your forget about what you are carrying and let you focus on the beauty of the outdoors.

Perfect for Traveling,
This review is from: Kelty Redwing 2650 Backpack (Sports)
Got this pack just before a weekend trip to Colorado in January 2011. I used to as my main luggage for a weekend trip from Houston to Denver for a quick weekend getaway. The pack was perfect, fit in the overhead compartments of the aircraft, so I didn't have to check it and pay the baggage fees so it saved me alot of $$$... This bag is well made and perfect for a several day getaway or a short backpacking trip. Excellent product!

I needed a back pack a little bigger for traveling on an airplane. The one I had was too small for 4 day trips. This one is perfect. It fits in the overhead and has enough room for a 4 or 5 day trip, at least for me. So far it's thumbs up in all areas quality and use.

I love Kelty! After purchasing (and loving) a Kelty Tioga 5000 for a 5-day excursion through southwest Yellowstone last summer, I came back for more when I needed to replace my day pack. It was a top loading JanSport Bridger 40 (which I also loved). The panel loading is awesome on the Redwing without compromising strength, thanks to compression straps. It has plenty of room for an overnight but compactable if you're just carrying a couple things on a short day hike. It's plenty tough, water resistant and has lots of pockets and accessories without feeling like overkill. You can't go wrong with Kelty.

Versatile Backpack,

This is a great pack. It is light, durable, has a lot of room and the pocket placements and size are well thought out. I can pack things for a 1 day hike up to a several day camping trip in this pack. The hydration pocket makes it easy to place and remove the bladder. The aluminum frame definitely helps prevent a sore back. I also like the resealable velcro on the side pockets. This enables a person to pack a long piece of equipment, like a machete, or fishing pole. There are some great online video reviews of this pack that will show all the handy things this pack has to offer.

Took this pack as my primary luggage on a 10 day mission trip to Uganda. While it doesn't have the volume of some bigger packs, the more traditional organization pockets you'd find in a day pack or typical student style pack were really helpful for carrying small devices (phone, ipod etc). The water blader pocket doubles as a great sleeve for my 15" macbook pro. It made getting through security checkpoints across the globe painless. The only issue if you're traveling, the alum support rod in the back causes it to be just a tad long in some overhead bins and it's too big for underseat stowing if the airline is picky (i.e. in the US).Overall, this pack has made that trip, countless shorter domestic trips and is my every day carry pack for over a year. It's rock solid construction and great overall options make this a hands down pick for daily carry and travel.

Let me preface this with, I'm not a backpacker. But! This backpack is great for me since it's the perfect size for daily use as a back pack for class, and the bar in the back makes even the heaviest loads of books comfortable to carry. the laptop pouch is a great addition, as is the headphone hole on the top. Perhaps the best thing is the durable waterproof fabric which keeps all my things nice and dry in the rainy spring season. The front pouch is also great for pens, post-its, and everything else a student needs on a daily basis. I have also used this on trips, its a great weekend sized bag, as well as a great carry-on size for flights. The metal bar in the back of the bag hasn't set off any alarms yet, and it easily fits under most airline seats. I recently took this on a trip to Iceland and it worked great as a day-bag to store snacks, layers of clothes, cameras, and a plethora of other things in. I love this backpack! |
