Smartly designed and versatile enough to cover just about all of your travel needs, the expandable, modular Ascender 22 bag with detachable, rolling chassis is the foundation of Kelty's new Travel line. Supremely adaptable, the Ascender 22 expands from a 40-liter carry-on size to 55- and 70-liter checked bag sizes. Plastics holding the straps broke on first outing. Whilst that may be an isolated product defect, the companies attitude (a bad one) get's it only 1 star. Repeated emails to their warranty and sales departments (inc photos) got no reply. If you spend that kind of money on bags you're better off finding a manufacturer that stands behind their product and cares about their customer (the fact that the wheels have no cover over them also means the bag drags on the wheels when a little fuller/heavier).

The plastic clips that hold the bag to the frame are totally flawed. Mine broke on about the third trip. I'm now using nylon cord to hold the bag to the frame on one side. The clips are simply designed wrong

Because of the external frame, if checked, some airlines require the bag to go through special handling at the airport. I had this with Easy Jet as well as BA.

I am fairly sceptically of Kelty. Their lower end backpacking gear has always left me underwelmed.

However, my husband recently bought the Bristol Duffel and we LOVE it. The Ballistic polyester is tough as nails and the color scheme is rather stylish.

If you have ever been in the air port with a stroller, laptop bag. diaper bag, roller carry-on, 20 minute layover and a connecting flight in a different terminal, then you know why it would be nice to strap your carry-on to your back and run!! This bag is a life saver!

Also, ever been on a trip, bought a bunch of stuff and wondered how you will get it home? With 2 taps of your wand and poof! this bag gets huge!

give it a shot.

Looked nice when got it out of the box but soon encountered a problem with a zipper during first use. A zipper snagged and was very difficult to correct and broke off. May work well in future but not a good start.

I travel a lot for work (flown over a thousand times in the past 13 years) so I go through luggage like water. Here are my pros and cons:

Pros:
* Love the expandable concept. Everyone knows your clothes expands once you get to your destination. So even if you don't add to your belongings, it's nice to be able to expand your suitcase so that as you move around, you don't have to pack and fold everything perfectly to make it fit.
* Super sturdy frame and wheels. The biggest problem I've had with luggage is the wheel well design is not robust enough, and the wheels tend to splay over time. No issues here:
* Smoothest rolling of any luggage I've seen. Feels like you are pulling it over an air cushion.

Cons:
* Handle telescoping is only single stage so I have to hold the strap in order for my legs not to kick it when walking. Thus sincce the strap is flexible, it makes it harder to control.
* Have to reconnect straps when expanding top. No idea why they designed it this way. They should just attach it to the top section so you don't have to reconnect it.
* Top can't be access unless you expand it. The zipper access should be outside the expansion zone.

All in all, I will keep and hold onto mine as my primary carry on. Good piece of kit, might modify it though to make it better.

I have had his for two years and bought through a retailer. I have taken it on about 20 3-5!day business trips.
Pros:
Very sturdy ! The only time one strap came undone was in Detroit.. Have gone through numerous cities and all the straps have been intact and it has been packed tight and full!
It is nice looking and I get lots of compliments.
Very expandable which I love!
The exterior has held up very well and the zippers work like new!
Cons-
Like the prior reviews noted the handle does not extend as long as it should and if you have the top expanded it can be awkward to pull..
As he also noted in order to have access to the top portion you have to have it fully expanded.. Weird..

It is very lightweight even when packed full and the wheels move freely and easy.

I paid a lot for the set up and though I love it.. It is not quite worth the expenditure to me.. I don't use as a back pack but lent to my son and he loved it! So I think the versatility in this way is very valuable!
