Great tarp with great tie down system of anchor points and the Nite Ize Figure 9 guyline adjuster is primo!

So anyone who catches the reference to the old "Crocodile Dundee" movie in my subject will realize what I am saying is, this is one big tarp. You may not be as dimensionally challenged as I am and understand just how bit a 16X16 foot tarp is. Me not so much. When I bought it and the smaller one was the same price, why not go with the bigger one.

Well that said, I LOVE this tarp. It was intended to be a small tarp above the entrance to my tent at Scout Camp, and it turned out to be the covering area for our entire site. This is a sturdy well assembled tarp. With all the anchor points it was really easy to set the ridge line and raise the sides with poles. Then as the weather turned nasty, we simply removed the poles, cinched up the lines and lowered the sides. It held well with no issues.

I will be purchasing at least one more in the small variety, If not one of each in the two reaming sizes.

I spent a lot of time trying to find a tarp that would meet my needs, It was a toss up between this one and another similar one. I am glad I went with this lighter fabric one. It did a good job deflecting the Sun in the 110°f heat index we had for multiple days and kept us nice and dry when the rain finally came.

The tie downs that came with it work great, Being at Boy Scout camp, it was important to actually tie the Taught line hitch that the tie downs replace though. But for those that are challenged by the right know, this will greatly increase the ease of setup for you.

Bought the 16' and absolutely love it. I've had it about a month and have used it for shade for a group of 8 on a 50 mile canoe trip, and slept 7 scouts and 2 leaders under it in a major storm in the Sierras . Works great with the adjustable poles but also with tie outs alone or with sticks. Awesome when you considered the weight is less than most backpacking tents. Recommend this to anyone who heads outdoors.

I had been hoping to get the 9 foot tarp, but the 12 foot was the only one that I could get from Amazon before I took my trip. But, I was planning to stay in a hammock that weekend so it was 12 foot or nothing. I didn't get the chance to use the tarp in the rain, even though there was a good chance of it raining while I was out.

However, the tarp was easy to setup and use. The grommets were large enough to take the points of my trekking poles, to form a "front porch" and the tie outs were large enough that tying things out like I wanted to wasn't an issue.

While I wanted the 9 foot tarp originally, I have to say that I've fallen in love with the roominess that I get with this 12 food tarp. I have plenty of room to store my gear, and some room to move around if I ever do find myself hammocking in the rain.

    **UPDATE**
I've had an opportunity to use the hammock in the rain since. The tarp does a good job of keeping the rain out, which is what you expect from a tarp. The "worst" thing that I have to say about the tarp is that it's sides are catenary cut just deeply enough that trying to use the second tie-out points as the corners and then pulling the end-loops over so that they form a kind of "door" or "wall" for the ends is useless, so in the cold, it's a bit drafty.

    Pros:
    1. The price was right
    2. Simple set up
    3. Adequate construction and fabric
    4. Works as a rain and sun shelter

    Cons:
    1. The cordage that it comes with is not long enough for most applications
    2. The stakes that it comes with are pretty useless for most settings.
    3. Their is no grommet or extra fabric along the center ridge line to support another pole/support.
    4. Must purchase more cordage, stakes and the support poles. (I purchased the kelty support poles and they were of excellent quality. No bends so far...1 year of use.)

4 stars as the price is pretty good and the tarp is pretty good. It looks like it won't last as long as an MSR but its a third of the price. The fabric is heavier duty than I was expecting for a $100 tarp and had a waterproof coating of some sort. The stitching has held through a few windstorms and the poles are still straight. The light grey color is nice for rainy days as it lets a lot of diffuse light in, however, its a tad bright for a shade tarp. Still is adequate though. The shape suits a shade tarp more than a rain tarp. Size up for a rain tarp to get coverage for your tables.

As others have pointed out, the 9x9 tarp is difficult to pitch as a standalone shelter because it lacks tie-outs in the middle of each edge. It has edge tie-outs, but they divide the edge in thirds, rather than half. That makes it difficult to use for the most common backpacking shelter pitches.

If you sew, it's not difficult to add some additional tie-outs. Alternatively, you could add grommets using a tool like this:
General Tools 1260 2 3/8-Inch Solid Brass Grommet Kit

In either case, apply a nylon patch to distribute the stress. I simply sewed on some scrap nylon, but you could also use a patch kit like this:
Wrights Bondex Nylon Repair Fabric Kit- 3 Inch x7 Inch 4/Pkg

The Kelty tarps are a good value, and the construction quality is good, so it's a worthwhile purchase if you're willing to make your own modifications.
