This light uses 6 AA batteries, something not noted in the description. They are mounted in those cylindrical gizmos that hold three batteries and there are two of those gizmos. The result of 6 AA batteries is too much weight to use for backpacking. The light functions well. I particularly like the ability to fine tune where the light shines. The 'paddles' that are the LED panels can be turned in almost any direction. The 'low' setting simply turns off one of the panels. I would have preferred to have both panels reduced to 1/2 brightness, or better yet, to have the brightness be infinitely variable. Leaving one panel on high doesn't help to reduce the glare that may be bothersome to your neighbors, though the ability to turn it to any angle should solve most of those problems. I got this to replace a Coleman LED lantern (full size) in my quest to save space in my two seat convertible used for camping. Space that can be used for other things, like food and water, and it definitely does that. As another reviewer commented, the light paddles do not lock into place in the closed position, which I solved by using a velcro strap. I fasten the strap to the carrying handle when the lamp is in use. There are some really nice design features, such as a stable base with a small footprint, and a notch in the handle to make it hang straight. All in all, a great choice for an all-around camping or home-power-outage light.

UPDATE: I found another plus for this light - trips to the john in the middle of the night while camping. The ability to aim the light paddle means that you can light your path completely while avoiding disturbing neighbors with errant light beams. The flat and heavy base (6 batteries), and the resultant low center of gravity means that it won't fall and go rolling across a public bathroom floor (a definite bonus!)

This product holds up. I love the fact I can use simple AA batteries and rechargeable at that. I've used it outdoors while camping and find the fact that I can turn one panel on or two depending on the amount of light needed very helpful. It is weather resistant and has sat on the picnic table during a strong rainstorm and works great. The folks at Kelty are very friendly and service oriented. I had a problem with this same lamp which did not make a good connection on one of the batteries. They replaced it immediately no questions asked.
Very pleased

I bought this to keep in the car just in case to change a tire in the dark, this thing puts out WAY more light than I expect. It's a bit spot lighted up close but at about 4-6 feet it's cone is about 5ft in diameter. Only draw back is it requires 6 AA batteries to run, I kind prefer a rechargeable option and maybe a DC jack. Its well balanced, made from anodized aluminum and plastic. Feels sturdy (I even took it all the way apart to see how it was made, if you plan to do this message me they get tricky towards the top) In any case I bought 2, I plan to buy more in the future once the price goes down to 30 bucks again. VERY handy! The heads spin 360degs too!

Nice light. Unfortunately it does not work with rechargeable (NiMH) AA batteries. I tried 3 different brands of NiMH AA batteries and it worked with none of them. It only worked with alkaline batteries. For a company that makes camping gear, it seems strange that they make a light that only works with disposable batteries.

It's about as I expected it to be. Haven't used it much yet...just enough to know it functions. I'll be curious to see how the pivot points and the plastic panels containing the LED's will hold up to abuse. A good shake will cause the panels to move- can open from closed position, etc. so I keep a rubber band around it to keep the panels closed during storage and transport. Those are the only potential issues that I find.
