1.0 out of 5 stars Pole snapped on first use
One of the main poles failed the first time I tried setting it up. Anchor spikes are flimsy and wouldn't hold in any real wind. Amazon was great about taking it back.

This is a really nice tent. Easy to set up, spacious, good for car camping. The tent that we received has a zipper (on the door) that is quirky... it has trouble rounding the corners and doesn't always work right, so that sometimes the teeth pull apart and you have to "unzip" it and then slowly zip it again to make sure it works right ... and it zips better from the inside than the outside, so we've found that it is sometimes better when closing the door from the outside to put your hand on the inside of the tent and pull on that part of the zipper until you get it all the way around the corners. This is a minor frustration that might just be a small defect of our particular tent, and perhaps we could exchange it or have it fixed, but it didn't seem worth the trouble to me. Another frustration we had was when our toddler got ahold of the tent pole and snapped the cord. Totally our fault... we broke it, there was no default with that. But Kelty had great customer service and even though we explained exactly what happened, they replaced the pole. We just had to pay shipping one-way to send the broken pole to them.

We bought this tent because of the price and reviews. Turns out to be a good purchase. The tent was very easy to setup. Setting up the tent took 1 person about 15 minutes. The tent stood up to quite a bit of wind with no problem, very sturdy. Did not get a chance to test for water-proof. Nice roomy tent, but I do not think 6 people can fit in it, 4 with all your gears would be ideal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy set up and sturdy, September 24, 2009

We tested this out in the backyard of a ranchhouse so we haven't
endured crazy wind/rain which is common in various places here
in Hawai'i, but for the most part we were happy with the construction
of the tent, ease of set up and sturdy tent poles.
However, when the description said it could sleep 6, I thought
that meant comfortably... Ha ha. I should have measured
our old tent, but relied on the "sleeps 6" description.
Totally made me laugh when I saw the diagram on the box
with 6 body shapes crammed into the tent all a jumble and
at different angles!!! Yikes. But believe it or not, we fit 4 cots inside.
Gear went under the cots plus there was some wiggle room. 1 cot
was at the rear of tent, parallel to the door and 3 perpendicular to
door and 1st cot. There was space to walk between each cot...
Just a place to sleep, but when we go up the mountain or
down to the ocean, I think we'll just do 2 cots and the kids can
do sleeping bags on the floor...
Main point, I got a 6 sleeper for 4 people, but if you need a lot of room
for gear and or adults, get an even larger one...
Otherwise, great so far!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 years and still serving, April 23, 2011

I purchased one of these tents in 2007 to use for family and scout camping. As a family tent, it's served me, three boys, and a dog in Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. For scout camping I've used this whenever I've had a vehicle nearby and needed space.

Yes, the pole sleeves get worn and need to be patched. Yes, the poles crack and need to be replaced. That's just maintenance. I've put this tent up on hot windy days and in the dark in the snow. Last weekend it was put up in the rain with a cracked pole, and it still performed well. I've purchased and used over a dozen tents. I felt, and still feel really good about this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good car camping tent, July 28, 2010

Have had this tent for 4 years, probably slept in it 20 times and has been pretty reliable for our family of four. Very easy to set up (why does anyone make a car camping tent with more than 3 poles ??), well ventilated, and nice to look out through the windows. Unfortunately, it seemed to have hit the wall this year: the bungy cord running through the tent pole snapped, the sleeves are tearing and, most frustrating, is that the zipper is skipping teeth (as a previous reviewer noted). I'd still recommend it but I am curious to see if the Kelty Mesa 6-person is more durable...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Family Tent but not great in the wind, February 4, 2010

This tent was a good purchase. The Pros: Easy set up with 2 people, lots of room esp head room, good-looking tent, the rainfly works great. Cons: This tent might fit 3 people comfortably but definetly not 6 - most tents are way off on measuring this. The tent seems a bit cumbersome to set up by yourself but it can be done. The biggest issue we had with this tent is because of its height it doesn't handle the wind very well. We used this camping in WY and it was flapping until the wind settled down several hours later. It almost seemed like it was going to blow away in the 30 mph wind gusts. Overall a good tent if its not windy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for car camping, but falls apart with heavy use..., May 24, 2011

I fell in love with this tent right away for its simple design and easy setup. I used it a few times car camping, in really windy/rainy weather and it didn't leak at all. It is a very airy tent because of the 2 open mesh sides, but I personally like the ventilation. I've camped in lows of the 30-40s with two large dogs, and this tent may have been cooler inside than some others would be, but it never got stuffy with all that hot collie breath, and I was warm enough...!

I then used it as a greenhouse for one summer, and discovered it is not very heavy-duty. After being continually exposed to sunlight for a few months, the waterproof lining on the tent started to yellow and peel off. At some point it started leaking in one corner, but I'm not sure what the point of failure was.

Then I took it car camping again, and being the Northwest, it rained again. This time, I noticed a little leakage, possibly from the rainfly seams. The fabric on the tent was compromised by the sun, however, and I ripped open about a 5 inch hole in the door when I opened it. Multiple other holes are starting to form, and it will leak seriously over time...

I still really like this tent, and I would recommend it for occasional car camping.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great tent, and very good value!, May 20, 2011
This review is from: Kelty Yellowstone 6-Person Tent (Navy/Grey) (Sports)
I used this tent for 2 nights of family car camping. On one night there were sustained winds of up to 30mph off a lake. We had the fly on, which surely helped with stability (using the footprint helps and is highly recommended--this tent is tall), and it held impressively. It did get blown around a little bit, but I never felt it was in danger of collapsing. On the other night we had a good thunderstorm, and the family (2 adults on a queen air, 2 kids 5-7 on thermarests) stayed dry. But, because this tent does not have a vestibule, you have to store your gear inside the tent. This is fine when you're 2 adults and 2 kids--there was plenty of room, but it's nice to have a dry storage space for mucky or dirty boots outside of the sleeping area--especially when you have dirt loving kids. I did end up returning it, in part because of the no-vestibule issue, and also because I wanted a smaller tent for backpacking. After a long story and the whole family spending a very cramped night in a Mountain Hardwear Light Wedge 3 in torrential rains (that tent is amazing), I'm once again looking for a solid value 6 person tent for family/car camping. I'll be getting a Kelty Grand Mesa 6. It has a vestibule, and I got it for a killer price. I like the Yellowstone 6 a lot, and would recommend it to friends and family.

This tent is a quick easy set up that is very roomy. Perfect for base camp or family camping.
