Ken Schultz's Fishing Encyclopedia,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ken Schultz's Fishing Encyclopedia (Hardcover)
What a great holiday gift for anyone who enjoys fishing or reading about any aspect of the subject. Schultz certainly is the definitive expert on this subject matter. Excellent photos and drawings as well as thoroughly researched topics make this an invaluable reference tool for anyone even remotely interested in the subject I don't think there's ANYTHING he's left out! I've gotten one for myself and three more as gifts.

This is the best of its kind. Perfect for the upcoming holiday season too. And if this book doesn't answer all your questions, check out the author's website ...There's even more info there!

This man knows what he's talking about,

This review is from: Ken Schultz's Fishing Encyclopedia (Hardcover)
Ken Schultz knows sportfishing. Anyone who reads this book will agree that he is truly an authority on the subject. His carefully organized listings, from A to Z, complete with beautiful artwork and enticing photographs, shines among all books in the outdoor category. Schultz must have spent years compiling this information, and I cannot imagine how he organized it so well. Whether I'm looking for a fishing destination, for information on equipment, or a description of a species of fish, it's all here. I read that he is the long-time fishing editor of Field & Stream, a magazine known for its great prose, and it is obvious that he is best in his class among fishing journalists.

This book has everything there is to know about fresh or saltwater fishing. A must gift for the angler in your family. Schultz is the man! He obviously spent a lot of time researching his topic, and in case the excellent prose isn't sufficient, the illustrations make every point that much clearer. A perfect gift for the expert angler, or a young one wanting to learn from the best!

It's not a cheap book, but once you purchase it you find that you got what you paid for! Great for people just getting started as well as the hardcore fisherman.Buy this book for yourself or as a present and you will be glad you did.Oh yeah,I like the authors name too! Big, Comprehensive, Sterile,
By Jack Donachy (Point Hope, Alaska) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ken Schultz's Fishing Encyclopedia (Hardcover)
Ken Schultz and his associates have presented anglers with one heck of a book--the kind that will make his target audience of anglers go "Wow!" Just recently, I used the Fishing Encyclopedia to answer questions about the Finger Lakes region of New York, ocean fishing in Japan, and the mahseer of India. For a quick sketch of any fish species important to angling as well as for overviews of various regions and countries, this book provides many useful references. But it's not as good as its literary predecessor, "McClane's Standard Fishing Encyclopedia," and I'll tell you why. McClane's was able to stand alone, and could even serve as the sole angling text on the bookshelf of anglers of past generations. Want to learn something about the sea-run brown trout fishing in Argentina and Chile? Pick up McClane's. Need a quick primer on how to fish plugs? McClane's had it. Not sure what the differences between trout and a charr are? McClane's could help you there, too. Of course, Shultz's book does all this as well, and in the descriptions of many fishing locales, Shultz book is not only newer, it's better. More detailed. More up-to-date. But here's where the books part company. With McClane's Standard on your shelf, you could learn to build a smokehouse, read up on fish cooking theory, build a rod, and follow the recipes for over 200 popular flies. Shultz's book has far less of that sort of comprehensive, practical knowhow. McClane's was the answer to the question, "If you were going to live in a cabin (or on a boat, or on an island paradise) and could have only one fishing book...?" People cherished their copies of McClane's, and they were picked up and opened again and again and again until the binding frayed and the pages were marked with patches of dried head cement and errant bits of peacock hurl and creases where rod binding had been held tight. I like Ken Shultz's tome, and am happy to have it on my shelf. At 1916 pages, 3 1/4 inches of thickness and nearly 9 1/2 pounds, it certainly is impressive. But it's not the companion McClane's book was. Even the illustrations of fish species in Shultz Encyclopedia feel sterile by comparison. |
