Book Description

August 2002
In the wilderness of Alaska, the rich and abundant salmon runs are being damaged at an alarming rate. Excess sedimentation to the streams of the Kenai Peninsula threatens not only the salmon’s continued existence, but also the multitude of people whose economy is dependent upon the annual salmon spawning runs up the tributaries of the Kenai River. The Phoenix Environmental Research Institute (PERI) sends one of its best aquatic biologists, Dr. Chad Gunnings, to investigate this wild corner of North America. When Chad and his associates are attacked at the Anchorage airport by members of the Warrior Society, a native para-military organization, they know that something very secretive is behind the problems in the Kenai. Their adventures take Chad and his colleagues to the site of the Kenai Catastrophe, the site of a 100-year old massacre of an Indian village. What does this catastrophic event have to do with the present-day environmental problems in the Kenai?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, December 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Kenai Catastrophe (Paperback)
This book is action packed from the very first paragraph onward. It focuses on issues of the environment in a way that the average reader would find very exciting. This Action character depicted in this novel represents the good fight against societies new enemies in an exciting manner. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action/adventure.

Michael Barbour takes an environmental issue and turns it into a marvelous story. I found myself becoming involved with the characters and not wanting to put the book down once I started reading. Very action packed and great book for all ages.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment, March 25, 2004
This review is from: Kenai Catastrophe (Paperback)
I wanted to like this book. I work in the environmental field and I was thrilled to see a book billed as "an environmental mystery." The hero is even an aquatic biologist! And, since I had read a favorable review, I was sure I was in for a good read when I ordered this book.

What a disappointment! If there was ever a book desperately in need of a good editor, it is this one. I can only assume that this book must be of the "self-published" variety. By the end of the second page, I had an overwhelming urge to whip out my red pen so I could correct the grammar and restructure sentences. I do a lot of writing and editing in my job, so perhaps I'm more sensitive to these things, but after 4 chapters I couldn't take it anymore and I put the book in my "donate to the library" pile.

Obviously, because this book has received some 5 star reviews, some people aren't bothered by the technical shortcomings of this publication. But, if bad grammar drives you nuts, stay away from this book.
