So I took it to Sears to get it fixed.

Kenmore is all I raved about for years due to my 15+ old Kenmore vacuum that worked like a charm. When that vacuum finally died I decided to buy a newer Kenmore. Bad Idea! I purchased the Kenmore Progressive Canister Red at Sears and have had the thing replaced twice and am now on my third non-working vacuum! The first vacuum had defects, the second vacuum stopped working, and my third one has now stopped working. All of this happened within a very short time of having them. Sears has stopped honoring their return policy because they are sick of me returning them with complaints and now I am out $400 and have a filthy house! Guess I'll need to go in search of a new favorite company.

I purchased our Kenmore 21714 vacuum just about a year ago and it worked flawlessly for that time. It was our third canister vacuum with Powermate since they've been making them, and they have all been good machines. Now my newest one quit working; the beater bar stopped cold. A little trouble-shooting showed that there was no electrical continuity from one end of the wand to the other so the problem was in the wand. The wand had 3 screws that showed so I removed them but the wand would not come apart. I figured all the plastic parts on the wand snapped together some way so that it was nigh impossible to dismantle it. So I took it to Sears to get it fixed. The gentleman asked what the problem was and I told him the wand had no electrical continuity from one end to the other. He asked where my vacuum was. I said it was at home. He said they wouldn't fix it unless I brought the whole vacuum in. I said there is nothing wrong with the vacuum and he says that's the policy. I say goodbye.
So the wand is coming apart even if I have to break it. This wand is made to expand and contract maybe about 9 or 10". I wondered how they achieved this electrically since you can't have wires doing that. So I downloaded a parts breakdown which didn't help me with this puzzle, or with dismantling it. I proceeded slowly and was able to fight the wand apart without destroying too much and discovered the source of the problem. The wand has a ribbon wire which is maybe the thickness of a fingernail and about a half inch wide. This ribbon wire rolls from a "J" shape to a "U" shape, and vice versa when you change the length of the wand. Mine had several kinks in it and one of them broke. I replaced the ribbon with real 14 gauge wire so it is now a fixed length wand which I will use for the floor brush.

I am an avid cleaner. Vacuum several times a week. Always was an Electrox vacuum person until they started making them plastic and still charging over $1500 per vacuum. I haven't had the vacuum long enough to rate for stability and longevity yet. The suction is actually quite impressive for both floor and carpet. Until now, I've hated all power mate attachments on all vacuums with the exception of my Electrolux attachments. This one may not be quite as good, but I still LOVE it. It works awesome on stairs and furniture. The vacuum is light and maneuvers easily. The swivel rug attachment is awesome for cleaning under beds, dressers and tables. The only negative thing I can say at this time is that I can definitely tell the clips that hold the crevice tool are going to break with continued use. No big issue, I just store it in the handle of the wand when not in use. For the price, this is a GREAT vacuum and I would recommend it to others.

I purchased a Kenmore vacuum just about 1 year ago. I have had to get the wand repaired 3 times costing over 400.00 dollars. I tried to get a new vacuum today but cannot because I am 10 day over my warrantee. What happen to the days of standing behind your products Kenmore??? What happen to the days of customer service and people who really care about how you feel when you use the product...not to mention the 5 times I had to call to get to the the right department.
I will never purchase anything from Kenmore.

I had the same problem reported by others: the wand stops transmitting juice to the power head, meaning the brush won't run anymore. This happened after roughly 20 uses. It's a shame because this thing is powerful and has nice features. Most of it is built solidly but the wand is junk. In fact, the wand broke another way on the second or third use (the clip which keeps the handle connected to the wand broke). I am just glad I bought this as an open box special, and didn't spend more than about a hundred samoleans.
The part that I'm still confused about (other than how the heck you take apart the wand to fix it) is why consumer reports gave this high marks. That's the main reason I bought it...

I replaced my old trusty Kenmore with this and I must say it was a nice upgrade. I like the swivel feature, the suction switch is a lot better than the older moldel & all of the tools are stored on the vacuum itself(very cool). Check this out the handle is adjustable for your height, it seems similar in weight. The only thing I dislike so far is it tough to change attachments. Its almost as if they dont fit right. Hopefully it loosens up as I use it more. I used it as soon as it came(old trusty was out of comission for 10 days & the dog hair was everywhere) It left clean paths on the dark carpet where the hair had been as I vacuumed. That's a good Vac! If I have any other issues I will update.
