I REALLY hate this vacuum.

Secondly, it's doesn't have the range of motion that a hard wood floor head has.

The junction between the hose and the wand sparked.

I bought this vacuum yesterday because it's rated number one by Consumer Reports (reason enough right there), and because it was on sale at Sears for $479.99, within my $500 budget. Most of yesterday was spent in a vacuuming delirium of joy. Here's why:

It picks up everything -- cat food debris, dust, spider webs, leaf litter, cat fur, everything.

All the buttons -- on/off, motor power, suction power, agitator on/off -- are on the handle. Pile height adjustment with your foot. Fly like a bird from floor to carpet and back!

Has a 27-foot cord, which means if I plug it in the kitchen, I can reach all the way to either end of the house.

Has a power agitator ("Power Mate") for carpets, which you can turn off to vacuum bare floors. Even better, you can pull out of the Power Mate a smaller floor brush that reaches into smaller spaces and crevices.

The wand lengthens easily so you can get spider webs off the ceiling, dust the tops of door frames and ceiling fan blades, and clean the air intake grate before you open it to change the filter and all those black dust clots fall down in your face.

Extra tools (upholstery brush, crevice tool, etc.) are right there inside the canister. Switch up in 30 seconds from carpet to couch.

And in another little compartment in the canister -- the "Pet Power Mate"! A tiny (2"h, 6"l,6"w) power agitator for stairs! Or for really getting at that fur stuck to the cat bed.

It's bright blue!

The hose and front wheel rotate on the canister, so it follows you like a well-trained dog. The Power Mate and floor brush swivel like snakes in any direction -- you can wangle them into and out of all kinds of awkward places. Take that, Dyson! You with your gimmicky ball.

I clean houses for a living and unfortunately two clients have this vacuum. I REALLY hate this vacuum. The bare floor brush doesn't pick up very well, I believe it's because of the wheels, it's not flush to the floor. And if you need to quickly get a cobweb or something on the wall or in a corner, forget it, it doesn't work at all. When I have to take the bare floor brush off to use the wand it has a quick??? release feature that I've almost injured my foot on trying to get it to let go. Also very hard to get the handle to release from the wand. The carpet (beater brush) is very heavy and awkward to maneuver. You have to yank the vacuum along behind you to get it to roll and then it doesn't roll straight, it goes left and right instead, constantly getting caught on things, around corners etc. It is quiet however. I recommend the Kenmore Progressive instead which is a user friendly decent vacuum cleaner.

I paid nearly $500 for this vacuum at Sears and IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR USAGE , I experienced a problem with the cable. If I had checked other customers' reviews prior to purchase, I would have noticed that the issue was a manufacturing defect of which Kenmore was aware of (the cable keeps rewinding and it doesn't stay out which makes it impossible for the vacuum to stay connected to the power outlet). Unfortunately the 12 month's warranty had expired. I have a small 2 bedroom apartment and I used the vacuum very infrequently because my cleaner brings her own.

I took the vacuum to the Sears drop off service center for repair, and I was charged $45 non-refundable diagnostic fee when I had already told them what the problem was. Days later, I got a call stating that they "found" a broken part in addition to the cable problem, and that it was going to cost over $200 for the repair. I found this surprising since the vacuum was working well, and the only issue was with the cable.

I decided to go ahead with the repair and when I went to pick it up, the vacuum was all scratched, I then suspected that other part they "found" broken might have been the result of the vacuum being mishandled in transit. I tested it at Sears before taking it home, and found that the cable problem had not been resolved.

At this point, several weeks had past and I had enough of wasting time driving to Sears and dealing with the people at the Kenmore repair center who never returned my calls. You can't speak with a technician, there are only customer service people at the other end of the line who do not have a clue about the product or its functionality. In the end, I left the vacuum for them keep and had to purchase a new one. Needless to say that I won't but a Kenmore product ever again!!!

Loved this vacuum the day we brought it home, but after one year, the dirt sensors failed (seem a bit superfluous anyway). Second year the wand height adjustment feature failed (only functions on the shortest setting -- always crouching to vacuum), the third year the cord retraction feature failed (now carrying the 25 pound canister, wand & beater brush head, and the cord up and down the steps), and the fourth year, the height adjustment bar on the beater head failed (it only sits flush on the floor now). Failed means plastic part broke! This machine is priced as a quality vacuum cleaner, but it is constructed out of inferior materials. The cost to have it repaired by replacing these inferior plastic parts with the same inferior plastic parts: $302.77. I expect that 4 years from now, we'd be replacing all those parts again. The salesman explained I made the mistake of not purchasing the $85 5-year extended warranty on top of the $600 we spent. A quality vacuum cleaner should last 10-20 years, but this one only made it 4. Don't waste your money on this product. For the same price a quality vacuum cleaner can be had with superior materials (abs plastic and stainless steel), durability, design, and warranty (5-10 years). Kenmore just lost this customer: I'm planning on purchasing either a Miele or a Dyson at a similar or lower price point.
