I received this machine as a gift 7 years ago, and have since sewed everything from cardboard, denim, upholstery fabrics, quilts, paper, etc on it, and it is still chugging along! It's wonderful because it's fairly lightweight and medium sized, so it's easy to transport. It's also very easy to learn on, I taught myself how to use it and had sewed very little previous to using this machine. It has three straight stitches and seven variations of zig-zag stitches, as well as settings for making a buttonhole; new machines have way more settings for different stitches, but I've learned to do a lot of creative things just with this amount. If you are a really serious sewer you may be interested in a fancier machine with more options, but this one is wonderful if you are okay with limited stitch options. Replacements for needles and the light bulb have been easy and inexpensive. I've recently been learning about how to reset the tension, and this has been the first time it's given me any issues. Read the whole manual before you begin using it, it will make you a better sewer and teach you how to take care of your machine so it lasts longer. I would definitely recommend this machine.

I've owned this machine for about 6 years now and have been surprised how well it has lasted. For a cheap little machine it sews really well and keeps on sewing.
Pros: Reliable and easy to use, does a remarkable range of things- straight stitch, zig-zag, darning, blind hem, buttonhole, and maybe a few more things I'm not thinking of right now.
Cons: It is slow, the speed is frustrating for me. The stitch lengths are preset and you get to choose one of three, ditto the zig-zag. Not adjustable anywhere for anything. No handle to carry it.
Overall a nice lightweight machine that works well. I'm teaching my daughters (ages 8 and 11) to sew with this machine, and they are enjoying it.

This little machine is made by Janome, their 11,000 series.

I asked a sewist/seamstress what machine I should buy if I wanted to create projects, repair clothes, sew clothes and home decor items and curtains, etc and not spend over $150. Told her I wanted to KNOW the machine would hold up to heavy use at times and yet it might sit for weeks without use. She sews a LOT. Has her own yahoo group. Is prolific in her creations and ideas and said of her 4 machines, this is the one she uses most.

Ordered mine in Pink, hard decision as I liked all the colors offered!

It sews wonderfully! I have since made 3 rag quilts, 1 faux cathedral window quilt, Lots of free-motion embroidery and several applique projects, curtains, you name it, pillows, etc. This little machine was worth every penny! I paid $108 delivered to my door.

With so many machines made in China and seeing my friend's high-end computerized machine stagger along after 5 years of LIGHT use, I wanted a machine I could trust and take to sewing meet-ups. I didn't have money to throw away but I also knew if it lasted one year ($8/month) it would be worth it for the items I wanted to make with it at that time. I've had it over 5 years at this writing and it is still there when I need it for sewing paper garlands, velvet, slick fabrics, jean repairs, zippers, curtains, art quilting, free-motion embroidery I haven't tried sewing aluminum cans yet, but corrugated cardboard goes through it great!

ONE thing I do NOT like is the plastic thread holder. It is intact and I've had no problems with it, but I'd like that in metal with a metal assembly. And, there are only three stitch lengths to choose from for the straight stitch and zig-zag stitch.

I have owned my mini ultra since 2005 and it's a gem!! First, it's the perfect machine for small living spaces as it stores easily and is not too heavy to move around. Second, it's consistent. I have found through trial and error that correct needle size and tension adjustments according to fabric and thread is vital. It is vital on every machine you use. As is regular cleaning. I was trained in fashion design and construction and learned to sew on a juki which uses one stitch type and uses it well, normal for an industrial machine. This lil one has several stitch types, more than I ever use. I make skirts, blouses, curtains, napkins, pillow covers, just the regular home stuff. This machine is not intended for heavy use. I use it for about 3 hours in a sitting, no problems. I will report that I experienced the thread fiasco from the bobbin several times until I realized it was my fault, not the machine's fault, incorrect needle size and ignoring tension. My friends with their fancy pantz machines are so jealous of my miniature power house!!

Note, if you are looking for more in a sewing machine then get a bigger machine. Go to a local sewing machine vendor and test them out, find what you really want rather than complaining about what you settled for.

I bought this machine used at a thrift store for my daughter. She in two weeks can sew and thread it alone and she is five.. It is easy to thread and set up..
She makes dresses for her american girl dolls. And aprons for herself.Of course with help.. Butkeep in mind I can not sew to begin with. So I did not feel like an idiot because the instructions are easy. The bobbin is easy and the threading is great.. I could even do it..:) I am learning to sew really easlily with this machine. Do I recomend it yes..
