5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read
This book is a great real life romance, but has a great appeal for history buffs, especially those who are interested in WWII. A look at a very specific and personal war experience.

We read this for our book club -most people when first arrived said that it was ok but then when the discussion started,
people could not stop talking about Pearl,Kenneth, and Pearl's second love, her husband and the father of the daughter who
wrote the book. One of our group is one of the "editors" mentioned in the thanks to page and knew this family-was close
friends with Susan Lentz, the author and said that she wanted to keep to the truth and to honor both her mother and Kenneth'
love & his contribution as much as possible. She said the mother Pearl was a charming vibrant woman & told the story to her
daughters with that attitude. People die or leave but love & respect remains & influences positive or otherwise also linger
throughout time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant, true WWII romance, September 27, 2009

This is a very personal account of the writer's mother's never forgotten love, killed during WWII. The author is a gifted writer and has done extensive background research to bring this love story to vivid reality. It is a short book, but nonetheless, very effective. If ever one needs a reminder of the personal cost of war, a story like this does the job in an unforgettable, poignant manner. From beginning to end, and including the lives led afterwards, this book satisfies. This is not fiction, but true life. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, January 23, 2008

Finally a WW II story with heart. Unlike the epic Hollywood versions, this is an honest and harrowing account of the human cost of war. With great accuracy, Lentz takes the reader through the real-life experiences of a soldier in the Mountain Infantry. However, the real soul of the book revolves around a love so powerful and so strong that it would live on long after both lovers were gone. Perhaps the most moving aspect of this story is the way that their love has been kept alive. In fact, while reading I realized that Ms. Lentz is not just telling a story, but also presenting her readers with a precious family heirloom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy reading, August 12, 2007
This review is from: Kenneth (Paperback)
This book had vivid descriptions and a story line that pulled me in immediately. When I had to stop reading for a while, I left the book with a warm, peaceful feeling yet I was anxious to get back to it. Nothing could be done to control the antagonist, so the suspense was light but compelling.
