5.0 out of 5 stars Feel your computer breathe!
This very cool gizmo will work with any self-powered USB connection (Mac or PC). Note that this will not work plugged into your keyboard (not enough power). It only works plugged into a laptop USB port, a powered USB port on your desktop model or a self-powered USB hub.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, bad implementation
I saw this item advertized and thought, "Wow, that's a great idea." So I ordered two, one for my laptop and one for my PC. The fan-blades are soft, and the thing puts out plenty of cooling air... when it works. The motor's sealed-in, however, so it overheats, and Kensington even included a temperature-switch to cut the fan off when it becomes too warm; unfortunately, this...

This very cool gizmo will work with any self-powered USB connection (Mac or PC). Note that this will not work plugged into your keyboard (not enough power). It only works plugged into a laptop USB port, a powered USB port on your desktop model or a self-powered USB hub.

Blades are very thin, paper-like rubber, so you won't cut yourself with them or worry about bending the blades when storing it in your laptop carrying case/bag.

Gives a really nice breeze, but it won't make a 100-degree room feel like it's only 75 or anything. It's a fan, not an air conditioner... but if you're in an office or on a plane where the air is stuffy, this is a great personal fan to make conditions a little less stifling. The cord/neck is sturdy, yet flexible and can be placed in a number of varying contortions to suit your needs.

I like this thing.

The fan-blades are soft, and the thing puts out plenty of cooling air... when it works. The motor's sealed-in, however, so it overheats, and Kensington even included a temperature-switch to cut the fan off when it becomes too warm; unfortunately, this means that to restartn the fan, you apparently hyave to remove it from the USB port and set it aside for awhile. Also unfortunately, the fan overheated in *both* of mine after 5-10 minutes, every time. Now, after a grand total of 2 hours use of each, they're dead as doornails; the motors are toast. Basically... don't waste your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little fan!, July 29, 2003
This review is from: Kensington 62648 FlyFan USB Notebook Fan (PC/Mac) (Personal Computers)
I like it a lot. Great for laptop and its got a flexible neck. Only issue might be the slight noise it creates. Haven't tested the battery drain yet. Recommended for laptop owners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best one of all of these fans, October 22, 2007
By
I really love this fan, it has saved my life countless times when sitting in class packed with people when I have my laptop out. I have tried some of the others that I have seen on Amazon, I tried the targus fan, and i have tried some of the other ones that say they come with a light also, but his one really takes the cake. I am ordering a second one right now because my first one broke, but don't get me wrong, it is a VERY well made product, but I don't think anything else could survive 6 months of daily use and being thrown around in my backpack, but this fan stood up to the test admirably before one of the blades finally being ripped off by the backpack zipper!!!

Very quiet. Well made; holds it's shape well. Easy to adjust such that it produces a nice breeze while staying out of the way.

I'm one of those people who is perpetually warm and it's even worse if the air around me is still. I use this fan all the time with my laptop and it's great. Other reviewers have commented that it's a little loud and while it does create some white noise (like all fans do), even at the library on campus, which is stereotypically silent, the noise cannot be heard from even the next cubical away. I figured at this price, maybe they wouldn't last more than a year or so before burning up, and it's too early to tell if my prediction is right or not, but in light of that expectation, I went ahead and purchased two. I have no regrets whatsoever. Love it!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars FlyFan motor stops when hot, June 13, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Kensington 62648 FlyFan USB Notebook Fan (PC/Mac) (Personal Computers)
I purchased two fans after I thought the first one broke after it stopped working. Shortly after I plugged in the second one, it stopped working also. I went to the Kensington site and searched for a technical support reason. They state at their web site that the fan will "stall" if its motor gets hot and you might need to reboot the computer to get it working again. Even rebooting the computer doesn't get the fan working again 9 times out of 10. I believe that having a fan stall when it is hot and allowing this to be an acceptable design charaacteristic is ridiculous. Isn't the point of having a fan to increase air flow and cool ? Now the owner of two defectively designed fans, I am very negative on this fan and this company for accepting the defect and selling it knowingly.

At the Kensington site the FAQ states:

Question:Why does my FlyFan stop?
Answer: The FlyFan has a little temperature-sensitive switch. If the fan stalls, the switch turns off the power in order to avoid overheating of the motor. It may take some time for the motor to run again after stalling the fan. If this happens, try restarting the computer. This may fix the problem by resetting the USB port.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Loud?, June 1, 2006
This review is from: Kensington 62648 FlyFan USB Notebook Fan (PC/Mac) (Personal Computers)
This was the one item that saved my job.
I work at a call center, and its a huge building. I am hot-blooded by nature and I was dying in the part of the call center I worked where no overhead Vents were.
Worked ordered this item for me, and it was an amazing difference.
It was not loud at all. If I was able to use it within a foot of my headset and the customer never knowing it was there, then it is not too loud.
I will admit that you need to be within 1-2 feet to feel it, but then again they made it so it wouldnt drain power from your laptops, so...
My cat finally won the war with mine at home, and torn it to shreds. Its cheap and WELL worth the money. I'm buying one again, and always will!

2.0 out of 5 stars Err..., September 23, 2004

I was hoping that by getting this I'd get a decent flow of air and i'd be able to use it anywayer. But I was sorely dissappointed. It doesn't give much air and all the air you get you need to be close to feel... plus its too loud to use in most places...

If you really need it, you can get it... but I can't use mine often because like I said its too loud. Not worth it, not enough air flowing.

I don't know what that other guy was talking about with it overheating and whatnought. I've not had any problems with it. It's probably the sweetest geek gadget around! It complements my iBook very well. Very cool.
