4.0 out of 5 stars Quirks but good for most
Pros: wireless, optical, accurate, fine tuning movement to fit the way my hand moves, works pretty much the same as other mice, easy install

Cons: Only for right-handed ppl, not good for solid color surfaces, an optical mouse pad is required to guarantee precise and predictable movement, somewhat heavier than most mice, runs on batteries, dust around the...

This review is from: Kensington 72129 Pilot Mouse Optical Wireless 5-Button USB/PS2 Mouse (PC/Mac) (Personal Computers)
A very nice improvement on their "studio" mouse which I liken to a sandal with buttons, the Pilot has a decent feel to it and actually looks kind of cool. The problem is that it still uses regular batteries. Rechargable is the way to go, plus you can boost the refresh rate of it so the location data is updated more often and accurately (for those gamers and photoshop people out there). They have to sacrifice DPI quality (how often and how fine movement data is transmitted) to save power on batteries. If they didnt, your AA's would last about 3 days.

Here's data I got from their website and my comments on each in brackets:

-Work without hesitation, delay or interference thanks to QuickRF™ wireless technology. (Could we stand it any other way? This is the standard in all cordless mice, not the exception.)

-Programmable buttons and award-winning MouseWorks® software reduce repetitive tasks to a single click. (I don't know about MAC's but in Windows, you can program any button to do whatever you want and that is without using vendor mouse software)

-Unique shape and design provide ultimate control and comfort for right-handed users. (sweet, as long as you're right handed)

-DiamondEye™ optical technology for unmatched acceleration control and ultra-high-speed tracking. (hmm, something i like)

-Four mouse buttons and scroll wheel, scroll wheel is also 5th button. (standard on all mice that cost over 5 bucks)

-Guaranteed to work right out of the box with PC and Mac. (Imagine if a company was to claim that they don't guarantee to work out of box? "Gee Maam, sorry.. we dont guarantee their all gonna work. Maybe you should buy another and try again."

-5-year warranty and free technical support. (nice)

Overall not too bad, but you can do better than this. I would like to recommend the Logitech MX700 instead of this. Look at em both side by side and see who copied who, as well as what was left out: On mouse low battery warning light, higher DPI rating, rechargability.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad tracking, January 28, 2005

The tracking on this mouse was terrible. I tried multiple surfaces just to be thorough and every surface resulted in jumpy movement. It really comes down to something like a low sampling period. It claims to have high resolution, but I think in order to conserver power it samples at a lower frequency that a normal wired mouse. I am sending mine back. I just purchased a Logitech MX1000 laser wireless and the results are absolutely superb. It was 2x as much but comes with a charger/docking station and tracks better than any wired mouse I have used.

This mouse goes through batteries like Hannibal through the Alps. It uses two AA cells in one week. Also, when the mouse is sitting still, the cursor creeps slowly across the screen.

Looks good. I like the rubber grip a lot. I feel mislead becasue I thought it did side scrolling with a roller tilt (the packaging suggested that). Not the case. It scrolls side to side only after clicking down the center button to change the function of the roller wheel. Worst problem for me is that it is physically heavy. Feels solid, but I feel like I'm pushing a weight around. Too much mass to get moving. I bought it to take stress off my wrist. Now it feels worse. I'm bummed because I wanted to like it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lagging, hard to remove, and not for use with other mice, March 4, 2005

This mouse looks a lot better then it works unfortunately. I repair computers and my one friend got the Kensington 72129. The mouse was slow to respond with the notebook and also deactivated his touchpad. I installed it on my desktop computer to see if the lagging problem also occurred on my computer, which it did. I changed the batteries with ones I just bought, and that did not fix the lagging problem even with the mouse being only 5 inches away from the transmitter. I spent over three hours trying to fix the lagging issue. I was unable to bo so and told my friend to return the mouse and we will go out to get him a better one. The Kensington 72129 is set up to be the only mouse and completely prevents any other mice (including the notebook's touchpad) from even being recognized on the computer, because I tried to get it to work with other mice. When I uninstalled the drivers and the software and disconnected the Kensington mouse from my desktop and reconnected my corded mouse. Now my desktop keeps wanting to install new hardware for the Kensington 72129. So now I am going to have to figure out on how to trick the computer into not looking for 72129 lol.

1.0 out of 5 stars Battery Saving "Feature"?, February 22, 2005
By
This review is from: Kensington 72129 Pilot Mouse Optical Wireless 5-Button USB/PS2 Mouse (PC/Mac) (Personal Computers)
I just got this mouse, and I am very unhappy with it. Every time I stop moving it for even a fraction of a second, the cursor freezes up and I have to click a button to unfreeze it. This is particularly cumbersome online, when it seems like I'm always close enough to a link to be sent off somewhere I didn't want to go. I contacted Kensington. They said it was a "feature", and "should not be a problem because it saves battery life". So does throwing it away...

1.0 out of 5 stars 1-5 second delay in response, November 29, 2005
This review is from: Kensington 72129 Pilot Mouse Optical Wireless 5-Button USB/PS2 Mouse (PC/Mac) (Personal Computers)
This is the worst mouse ever. While it feels great in your hand, and I wish more mice had rubber on their body, the functionality is horrid. When you move the mouse, it takes 1 to several seconds before the mouse/receive "wakes up". This happens EVERY time you stop moving the mouse not after a while of sitting.

I called their tech support, all they would do is tell me to use newer and different batteries. So I yelled at them and they sent me another set... and it did the exact same thing.

I want a mouse that moves when I move my hand!

What's worse? When the mouse actually does sit around for more than 30 seconds (maybe a minute? didn't time it but not long at all), then it really goes to sleep and you can't make it move at all unless you click one of the buttons... what sucks? It SENDS the "wakeup" button click through!!!

So if you left your mouse on "Buy Now" on a thousand shares of X to think about it and research it and decided not to buy it, you are screwed. You can't move the mouse off the button and clicking the button to wake mouse up will pass the click through and press on the button for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirks but good for most, December 4, 2005

Pros: wireless, optical, accurate, fine tuning movement to fit the way my hand moves, works pretty much the same as other mice, easy install

Cons: Only for right-handed ppl, not good for solid color surfaces, an optical mouse pad is required to guarantee precise and predictable movement, somewhat heavier than most mice, runs on batteries, dust around the "eye" can affect movement (then again this affects all optical mice but this one doesn't have a good way of deflecting dust)

Overall value: Pretty good but it's not for the ones who are very picky about mice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy Camper, January 17, 2008

This review is from: Kensington 72129 Pilot Mouse Optical Wireless 5-Button USB/PS2 Mouse (PC/Mac) (Personal Computers)
Wow. A lot of unhappy people here.

It's always hard to chose a mouse. You stand int he store and try to play with their demos that are secured to the counter and are usually at the wrong height. ugh.

But this mouse felt comfortable in my hands, as did others. But this model has rubber ribbing on both sides, which turned out to be a great feature. So many times you end up squeezing the mouse with your outer fingers, or pressing down with your palm in order to grip the mouse to move it around the table. With these rubber fins, you grab the mouse with almost no effort - making it much more comfortable to hold for 8 hour stretches...

I also have had some of the wireless issues the other reviewers saw. The mouse does need to be closer to the receiver than it should have to be. It does 'sleep' too quickly, and I have to shack it or click to wake it up. Something a wireless mouse shouldn't have to do. But the comfort of this mouse far outweighs the wireless hiccups. After 3 years one of the buttons is starting to give out, and I'm looking to replace it with the same model, I'm so happy with it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Non-standard mouse4 and mouse5, December 21, 2004

I don't know if there is a standard position for the mouse4 and mouse5 buttons on the left side, but this mouse had the buttons backwards from every other mouse that I've used (Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer, unknown Logitech 5 button wireless mouse).

The mouse itself worked ok. It seemed a little jumpy, but I think all wireless mice are like this.
