Great Mouse For The Money, Not For Diehard Gamers...,
By "The Woj" (Downers Grove, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kensington 72257 Ci20 Optical Mouse for PC or Mac (Personal Computers)
After dropping over 40 bucks on a Logitech Mx518 which broke down after about a year, I did not want to spend a lot of money on a new mouse. After much "research" & reading the reviews here, I decided on the Kensington Ci20 (I was able to purchase mine for just over 20 bucks). The mouse is very responsive and has a great feel. This is primarily due to the rubber side grips and ergonomic shape. The Ci20 is larger than my "old" Logitech; consequently, it may not be a great choice for users with smaller hands. The mouse is responsive, but may not be "quick" & accurate enough for diehard gamers. If you are buying this as a gaming mouse, you may need to look elsewhere (I recommend the Razer Diamondback Acid Green). Even though the Logitech I used previously was buggy with my USB ports and the buttons gave out after about a year, it was much better for gaming than the Ci20. However, if you are not a dedicated gamer and are looking for a great mouse at a very reasonable price, the Ci20 is for you. I also would like to add the software is very easy to install, navigate and upgrade (unlike the Setpoint software from Logitech). Just plug it and and go. Overall one of the best mice I have ever used.

Smooth and accurate tracking. The extra buttons are a useful addition. Does feel a little big and moves on a smooth surface with less tension then I would like but a good overall value.

I got this mouse as a replacement for a Kensington PilotMouse which was the best mouse I ever used ---and wore out. Unfortunately, they don't make the pilotmouse any more and this one was the closest I could find. This mouse is advertised as being "optimized for right-hand use" and I am left handed. I am used to using right hand mouses but I admit I prefer a little less optimization which in this case means that the shape is a bit skewed and the extra buttons are on the wrong spot for me. If I were right handed, I rate this thing with five stars. As it is, four is all they get. What I like about the mouse; the size which just fits my hand, the responsiveness, and the rubber side grips. It also has a scroll wheel with just the right kind of tread. In my experience, it is important to make sure you don't use an optical mouse on a shiny surface as it seems to confuse them and this one is no different, but used on a matt surface, a blotter or even a taped-down sheet of typing paper it tracks beautifully.

i bought this to replace the stock mouse which came with my apple imac computer. This mouse is fairly large, which is nice because it fills the palm of the hand and doesn't feel cheap, light, or "plastically". I've tried it on Mac OSX and Windows XP with no problems. It would be nice is the software allowed you to increase the scrolling speed, and tracking speed, and assign more custom tasks to the different buttons. One other thing about this mouse is it has a more slow, precise way about, perfect for drawing/drafting work. But those power-users who prefer a lighter, quicker feel for moving windows around, and performing a lot of rapid, in-precise movements may find this mouse a bit restrictive.

I had orginally planned to get a wireless mouse, or maybe even one of the fancier Logitech mouses (mice? ;-). I finally decided I didn't really need all the fancy "bells and whistles" and bought this mouse by Kensington.
I think it's a good choice if you want to upgrade from the standard mouse that comes with most computers. The footprint is only slightly larger than a standard mouse but it's quite a bit taller, which I like. I have medium sized hands for a guy. It was easy to install both the mouse and the included "Mouseworks" software (you will need to load the software if you want to reprogram the two extra buttons on the side of the mouse). The software also gives you a number of options in the use of the mouse (more than the standard ones that comes with Windows). It feels good in the hand and I'm satisfied with the product. I particularly like the feel of the wheel. It's not perfect however; the two extra side button could have been placed just a little better for my use and the overall shape could have been better (I wish there was a slight "rest" for the fingers on the right side of the mouse). These are minor quibbles however. The two side buttons comes programmed for "back" and "forward" for viewing webpages. I reprogrammed mine to "double click" and "back" and that's been useful. I don't know how long the thing will last since I've only had mine a short time. It seems to be a well-made product and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone who's looking for a better basic mouse.

The Kensington Ci20 is an excellent corded mouse and a great value. I
spent a *long* time looking for good mouse to use with Linux. I have larger hands and I really like the "feel" of this mouse. It also has two additional "thumb buttons" which I can configure to do special things in some Linux/X11 programs. I used to be loyal to Logitech but this mouse forced me to make the switch. Very happy with this one!

It's my first optical mouse and I like it! Buttons clicks were a little stiff at first, but they are fine now. I really like the rubberized grips and buttons.

A mouse is a mouse is a mouse is a mouse......or is it? I was apprehensive about getting something other than an Apple Mouse, but this Kensington mouse exceeded my expectations. It just has a good 'feel' to it. I like its design and the way it comfortably fits the hand. Kensington 72257 Ci20 Optical Mouse for PC or Mac

extra buttons DO NOT WORK on Vista,
This review is from: Kensington 72257 Ci20 Optical Mouse for PC or Mac (Personal Computers)
I love the ergonomics of this mouse. Too bad that Kensington is falsely marketing it as a "5 programmable button" mouse. The software included with the product explictly states that it does not support Vista.
How can this be? Vista shipped almost three years ago. It's really hard to believe that Kensington still does not support the most commonly used operating system. I guess they don't really care about their customers. Their software does claim to work on XP and Mac OSX, but if you're on Vista be warned.

My favorite mouse, an older blue and grey version of the Kensington 72121 Mouse-in-a-Box Optical Elite USB Mouse (PC/Mac), finally died after several years of use, and I took the opportunity to find something that might be even better. Understand that I'm a mouse snob -- for as much time as I spend using a computer, I want my mouse to fit like a glove. The Ci20 comes close, but has a couple of dealbreakers for me.
The Ci20 is a big mouse, make no mistake. I like that. But the "hump" of the mouse lies pretty far back on the body of the mouse, so my hand tends to settle farther back on this mouse than on a mouse with its hump in the middle. This, in turn, pulls my fingers and thumb farther back. After a couple of minutes of use, the front thumb button goes out of reach. I like to hold the sides of my mouse with my thumb and pinky, touching my mouse pad as well. I momentarily use the base of my thumb and pinky if I want to click side buttons. The concave sides of the mouse start their curve very close to the bottom of the mouse, so my fingers naturally slid upward on the slick rubber, and I soon lost the tactile feedback I usually got from having my fingers touch the mousepad. I hate installing mouse software, so I plugged the mouse into my XP-based computer, and XP had me up and running in about 10 seconds. Kensington mice seem good like that, in my experience. The buttons click effortlessly, and the wheel has the best balance of smoothness and tactile feedback I've used on a mouse. The mouse isn't heavy at all, surprising for how big it is, and it glides effortlessly over my cloth-top mousepad. For casual use, this is great, but for a fun World of Warcraft battlegrounds run, the shape of the mouse makes me lose my precision. If Kensington relocated the front thumb button to the right side of the mouse (this mouse has the perfect shape for a right-side button) and didn't make the sides concave, I'd have a five-star mouse for the next half-decade. Essentially, This mouse impresses me with its quality and attention to detail, but it requires a fundamentally different mousing style than what I use. |
