How it works:
Ever noticed that small slot on your laptop and wondered what it was for? On most laptop computers, there is a standard Security Slot on the right-hand side of the computer near the back. Some manufacturers place it on the left-hand side near the back, or at the rear of the computer. Many manufacturers also include the Security Slot on the docking station and may position it so that when the slot is in use, the laptop is locked to the station. On flat screen monitors, the Security Slot is usually found on the rear of the computer monitor, either near the base or on the top.

The Security Slot is a specification designed by Kensington for the manufacturers of electronic/computing devices (like laptop computers, flat-screen monitors, projectors and cameras) to build into their products to accommodate a security cable. The slot itself looks like a small rectangular hole with rounded corners, about 7mm (just over 1/4 inch) long. Typically, manufacturers mark the slot with a Kensington lock logo (see below). Other manufacturers may use a chain logo for the same purpose, and still others include no marking next to the slot.

Why is laptop security important?
It is more important than you think to make sure your laptop computer does not end up in the wrong hands. If you purchased a laptop for personal use, you are probably very protective of it, most likely because of the cost to replace it. You also understand the hassle of re-creating the information stored on that laptop...personal files, pictures, contact information, calendars, etc.

Where to lock your laptop:

At your desk:
Most desks have pass-through holes for computer, electrical and phone cables. Put your ComboSaver Combination Portable Notebook Lock cable through the pass-through hole and wrap it around the back of the desk or desk bracket.

At your hotel, attach the lock:

• To the closet's clothing hanger bars
• To the arms of the hotel room chair (but make sure they're big enough to resist breakage!)
• To a bolted-down table
• Through a dresser drawer handle (make sure that it is strong enough to resist a strong pull!)

In your car, attach the lock:

• Around the steering wheel
• Around the headrest attachment bars if the headrest is not detachable)
• In the trunk, through the spare tire if it uses a locking mechanism
• To the baby seat hook above the back seat
• Around the seat belt loop in shoulder-belt seat belts (If possible, put your laptop in the trunk or below the seats so it is not visible)

At the airport:
Attach the lock around the bolted-down seats in waiting areas of most airports.

before I started college, I was told that I should get a laptop lock for living in the dorms. I bought this lock from the apple store. after setting the combination, I had great difficulty fitting it into the slot on my computer, so I had a friend do it for me. later when I wanted to take it off, it was jammed and would not come off, no matter what I tried. eventually, I resorted to having it sawed off with a hacksaw. now i have the combo part permanently stuck to my computer, making me look like a bloody criminal. DON'T BUY THIS LOCK!

I have a brand new ('08) MacBook, and I bought this cable lock at the Apple store.

Here's why this lock is terrible:
* Cable is so springy I'm afraid it will fling my computer across the room if I stretch it to more than about 4 feet long. It keeps getting caught on all of my other wires.
* It's flimsy. The fit is very loose and it seems like a good whack would pop it out of the computer.
* Setting/unseetting the combination hurts my fingertips.
* It almost got stuck on the laptop (which would have tested the theory about popping it out with a good whack).
* Once off, it was stuck again (unable to put back on the computer), as the combination had now changed on its own.

I'm returning this ASAP. Shame on the Apple store for carrying this garbage!

p.s. We bought two. My partner doesn't hate hers as much as I do mine.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1505, and this lock does work with it, it's just very loose when it's locked. If I were to buy another computer lock, I would get one that doesn't have a cable that coils up, just a straight cable. My reason is that the ad said something like, "It extends up to six feet." Yeah, it probably would, but the springyness in the cable makes it so you have to put a lot of tension on it in order to do that.
I think that overall the quality of this lock is pretty good, it hasn't failed yet.
It is a little difficult to put the combination into the lock, because when it is in the computer, you have to enter the combo on the side, not the top. Typical engineering I guess.
I would recommend this lock if you don't mind little ergonomic flaws.
