Customer Questions & Answers

Customer Reviews

In brief, it feels like a nice ink pen in the hand, and the clip makes it easy to transport.
Sam M. Tannenbaum
By the look of this Kensington stylus it almost looks like the stylus tip can be screwed off and replaced but alas not.
Joseph Spiegel
It's not a bad stylus--although I wish that the stylus tip was as firm as the ones on the Kensington or Wacom.

A stylus for your tablet or phone is such a thing of personal taste and preference, that to review one is like telling someone what you think of a certain brand of coffee. What I think is delicious, you might think tastes like battery acid. That said, I've tested a LOT of different stylus and discovered there's a trade-off with every one. The Kensington has come closest to what I was looking for.

First of all is the feel of the weight in my hand. Other stylus tend to be a little too light, and don't give you the kind of control you need if you're going to draw fine-lined illustrations. Other stylus' rubber nubs are too fat or squishy, and couldn't give you a thin line no matter how you set the settings on your tablet. I was surprised that the Kensington delivered a nice thin line and gave me a lot of control when writing words, or creating illustrations. Maybe that's the "virtuoso" part of the name.

The stylus also has a ball-point pen on the other end that takes Parker refills, which is fine, but I find it to be a bit stubby as a pen, since the size of the unit was really designed for stylus use. I'm not sure I'll ever use the pen. There's nothing special about the pen itself, but you might find it handy.

If there's any downside, it's the price. At $25 I think it's overpriced although, if you've searched far and wide for a good stylus, you'd probably be willing to pay it for a stylus like this that gives great control and the ability to truly draw thin lines if you want them.

If you're looking for a nice stylus with a narrow tip with pen, this is a good one, if a little expensive.

I've another Kensington stylus, the Kensington K39304US Touch Screen Stylus and Pen for iPad, Tablets, Touchscreens, iPhone and Smartphones, including iPhone 5 - Black. It is about $5 to $10 less expensive than this one, but there are a few differences :

1. The Virtuoso is slightly longer.
2. the Virtuoso has a smooth body, instead of a slightly rubbery, grippy body.
3. The capacitive tip of the Virtuoso is visibly smaller and thus a little more precise. It's not as precise as, say, an Adonit, but it is better for tapping and swiping compared to those type of styluses (styli?).
4. The pen cap, when removed, can cover the capacitive tip, meaning you won't have to set it down somewhere and lose it when using it as a pen.

It would be nice if there's a cap for the capacitive tip as well to protect it in a bag. There is a rubber O-ring on both ends of the stylus to hold the cap very firmly in position. The stylus has a nice weight - substantial, but not too heavy, like a good pen.

In use, it is responsive. Great for tapping, OK for swiping. A little more precise than a finger and doesn't leave streaks on the glass, but obviously a little less convenient than a finger. Just for laughs, I tried using two of them like chopsticks to do a pinch-zoom. This is something that's never going to catch on :)

It takes Parker type refills. The pen is a ball point and works OK, and can easily be changed out.

The subject line of this review really says it all. We got it, and all of us in our family made good use of it. The pen worked well, it was attractive, and it was great as a stylus, with a comfortable weight and size.

Until yesterday, I'd give it 5 stars.

But then, after a few weeks of use, the plastic nub that you use on a tablet surface fell off. I tried to put it back on but once off, it was impossible to get it to stay in place (for me). So now, I have to give it 2 stars at best. Durability is key, and this fairly expensive stylus didn't last as long as some much cheaper ones we've owned.

Since getting an iPad a couple of years ago, I have tried many, many styluses. Most were too light for my liking and the rubber tips were bigger than they needed to be. I tried another rather large assortment of stylus/pen combination. They, too, were on the chubby side, the pens were cheap and token and the tips did not work reliable on either my iPad or my )more recently acquired) iPhone5. Then comes this Virtuaso Stylus from Kensington, a maker of generally well-designed and useful iEquipment. This Virtuoso Stylus is no exception.

The Virtuoso is slim but substantial. It has the weight of a good, narrow pen. The cap has a firm clip and locks solidly over the rubber tip when you are using the pen-end. Moreover, Kensington had the good (and unusual) judgement to use Parker refills rather than the cheap, low volume type found in many other stylus/pen combos. The colors available are a bonus issue and though the tone has nothing to do with the function, the color adds a bit of additional uniqueness to an already satisfactory product.

This has quickly become my "go to" stylus for my touch screen gear.n't cheap. You can find other styluses foe 3 or 4 for $5. Sometimes, however, you DO get what you pay for. I recommend it highly.
