Wonderful Romance Novel,

This review is from: Kentucky Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
Hannah Howell never seizes to grab your attention from the very first page to very last sentence. Her dive into a western novel from her many Scottish Novels was a pleasant surprise, of course who can resist in the MacGregor Scottish taste in it, either! The books starts of with a young lady who has been jilted by her fiance. With her family in financial woes she makes a gutsy move and proposes to a rough woodsman gentleman who saves her from the clutches of a few unruly men with unspeakable motives. The woodsman ends up being jilted by his soon-to-be fiance who he finds with the young lady's previous suitor. This book goes from a beautiful suburb to the rough woods of a young Kentucky. A definite must have for those who enjoy romance novels with twists and, of course, those who enjoy Hannah Howell!

Not Hannah's Best,

This review is from: Kentucky Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
I have always loved books by Hannah Howell and although this story didn't take place in Scotland, as many of her stories do, I thought the fact that she'd written it was enough promise. The storyline is good: Clover Sherwood has found herself in dire straights after her father has committed suicide, left her to care for her mother and two young brothers, and her fiance has dumped her now that she is broke. She takes drastic measures and proposes to a Scottish frontiersman she has just met to ensure her family's future and the results are adventure, intrigue and romance. However, as much as I did enjoy the story, I also felt that it lacked the steamy romance normally found in Howell's books. I also thought so much more could have been done with this plot, but the overall results still made for a decent read. I'd recommend Kentucky Bride as a book to just in escape into for a little while, but don't worry about not being able to put it down.

I wish books like this were written more often! Such a nice change of pace from the regency historical romances that are churned out today! I wish more authors would go back to writing great Americana romances like this one!

reprint of a wonderful Americana,
This review is from: Kentucky Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1794 Langleyville, Pennsylvania the death of her father hurts but society girl Clover Sherwood is stunned to learn he left her mom Agnes, her two younger twin brothers and her with nothing except poverty and scandal. Her fiancé Thomas Dillingsworth politely dumps her by a letter and the Sherwood family high class friends do likewise as if they are lepers.Rugged Scotsman Ballard MacGregor arrives in town seeking a wife. He is taken aback when obviously upper class Clover proposes to him. He thinks she is pretty and sweet, but will never survive life on the Kentucky frontier. Still he marries her and his trepidation proves ominous as she struggles to adapt to settlement life. Clover is ready to leave defeated while Ballard still hopes to win her love; not realizing it is her love for him that has ready to leave. Proving she once had a life outside the Highlands, this is a reprint of a Hannah Howell 1994 early American historical romance starring two likeable lead protagonists. The story line is owned by courageous Clover as she struggles to make a new life on the frontier. Although a misconception plays a pivotal role that feels unnecessary as the lead couple has plenty on their plate with her adjustment from upper class Pennsylvanian to working Kentucky woman in a an overall wonderful Americana.
