Book Description

December 1, 2007
Kentucky Derby is a visual journey chronicling the cast and characters of the 133rd renewal of the Run for the Roses set amidst the nostalgic backdrop of landmark Derbies preceding it. Written by John Asher, Churchill Downs own resident historian, this lavishly illustrated collectible book is filled with 96 pages of vibrant full color photography and vintage archival images heralding the evolution of this premier racing celebration. It's all here, from the infield throng to the finish line - the mint juleps and the memories that make this annual rite of spring an iconic American spectacle. The Kentucky Derby has witnessed many special and unforgettable moments since its first running in 1875, but few Derbies have conjured the magic that was displayed beneath the venerable Twin Spires during the 2007 commemoration of one of the world s grandest sporting and social traditions. A retired businessman turned horseman, a one-time rodeo bull rider who turned to a safer pursuit of training horses, and a jockey whose debut in the saddle came at the age of eight at a remote Louisiana bush track light years from the glory of Churchill Downs were all brought together by the life-altering presence of a Thoroughbred named Street Sense. The dark bay comet of a colt carried the trio of hometown heroes to victory in Americas greatest race before a crowd of 156,635 that even included the Queen of England herself. Measuring 8.5 x 11 with over 120 photos.

About the Author

Author John Asher, a native of Leitchfield, Ky., first fell in love with the Kentucky Derby after watching Proud Clarion upset the great Damascus in the 1967 running. This experience gave birth to an enduring interest in the history and heritage of the famed race and created a fan for life. He joined Churchill Downs in 1997 and now serves as the track's vice president for racing communications. The Western Kentucky University graduate launched his career in racing as an electronic journalist and earned five Eclipse Awards for outstanding radio coverage of the Thoroughbred industry, the Engelhard Award from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders and the Warner L. Jones Horseman of the Year Award from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners.
