Great Character Actors To Spend Some Time With, March 18, 2005
This review is from: Kentucky Rifle [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"Kentucky Rifle"..1955/Color directed by Carl Hittleman.
This has some great character actors to spend some time with. Chill Wills, Sterling Holloway, Henry Hull, Lance Fuller and Cathy Downs. Don't expect too much though, in the way of plot or cinematogrpahy. A wagon load of Kentucky Rifles, must be protected at all costs, including any passengers who may be along, from the Comanche(who get a pretty bad rap in this one).
If you love these old oaters, you should check out the Great American Western series put out by Platinum Disc. There are about 25 volumes of the series, with four flicks on each disc. They may be purchased individually or in sets of anywhere from 2 to 10 discs. "Kentucky Rifle" may be found on Volume 20 of "The Great American Western Series", (also included in Vol 2 of the 10 pack set). Volume 20(asin - B00009MEI6) also includes "Bells of San Angelo with Roy Rogers and, a great documentary about the John Ford Western, starring "Pappy" himself, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda. The DVDs are not pristeen, but all have 5.1 enhancement, and the price is right(beats buying all these old westerns individually).
Happy Trails...Laurie

Torpid Western, March 7, 2008
This review is from: Kentucky Rifle [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A wagon train bound West from Independence ,Missouri has one wagon that is more heavily laden than others .It holds a large quantity of rifles which their maker ,a gunsmith named Clay (Lance Fuller)believes will be vital in the defence of any settlement eatablished by the pioneers. The problem is that ,so heavy is the cargo that wagon breakdowns are common. When it breaks more severely than before a small party is left behind to repair the wagon while the main body presses ahead leaving them to catch up
Clay is one of the party ,a grzzled scout (Chill Wills )is another alongside a dim witted sidekick ,a preacher(Henry Hull)two women one of whom is pregnant and then owner of the wagon who is antagonistic towards Clay. They progress slowly amidst bickering while the Indians gather and attack .
The pace of the movie is too slow to exert any sustained grip on the viewer and muddy sound and colour dont help either .Siege Westerns like this need more intensity in directuion to work fully and this drifts rather than gathers momentum .The performance are pretty good however and it does gather speed towards its climax
A routine B Movie western that will probabaly satisfy genre lovers but without having wider appeal
