I bought this plus installation from AudioExpress near where I live at. It does everything that it says, and yes, buttons 1 and 2 can be used to vote Thumbs Down or Thumbs Up if you connect your iPhone to your Pandora App. I noticed that the stereo will actually determine whether or not your Pandora app is turned on and will immediately switch to Pandora Mode.

However, the controls are not very advanced or detailed. Yes, I can select stations by turning the knob, but I couldn't favorite songs or create new stations. Also the LED display that tells you the song's title and artist has a tendency to randomly freeze, so you might be getting the same description of a song while a DIFFERENT song from the station is playing. This happens a lot when I get spotty cell coverage on my iPhone. As soon as I leave a area with coverage, and then regain my 3G connectivity, my LED display freezes and I have to park somewhere to remove the faceplate and then push my pen or culinary thermometer into the "reset" switch to put it back to normal.

Please note, that the bugs I found only is relevant if you intend to use PANDORA with the stereo. The rest of the features, such as iPod/iPhone support is SUPERB in my opinion. As soon as you plug your iPhone into the USB port, the Kenwood actually detects it somehow, and immediately turns on iPod mode. From there, I can push the magnifying glass and easily select either from my Playlist, Artist, etc, and even specific songs.

In comparison to my previous crap JVC # Something in my old car, I love the improvements that the Kenwood added. Also, you can have SIX channels of SIX pre-programmed radio stations, that'll give you 36 stations you can choose from on the fly!

I purchased an x397 for my truck. I went with the Kenwood because I had such a good experience with an older Kenwood U248U. I went with the low end of the Excelon line because it was on sale at the same price as the non-Excelon, and because my installer said it was good, worked well with the iphone, was very durable.

Good points:

- Big honkin' volume knob: this knob is undercut around the edge so its easy to get a good grip on it. Most important thing is to be able to easily control the volume. Some headunits have slippery inset volume knobs, a chore to grip it if you've got sausage fingers.

- The iphone/ipod support is transparent and perfect because the unit stays out of the way:
1) Plug in the iphone using a usb iphone cable.
2) Phone starts charging automatically.
3) If ipod input isn't yet selected, push the ipod button to switch to ipod input.
4) Awesomeness! This head unit doesn't automatically search for music on your ipod and invent its own weird playlist (alphabetical): it automatically interfaces with the music app and continues playing whatever you were playing. You can choose music on the iphone and it will play. Further, if you start up a navigation app (I use waze) then the music will be silenced whenever the app has something to say.

- A sound passthrough mode was available on my older kenwood (248U) but needed to be explicitely enabled somewhere deep in the menus. Glad that this headunit is willing to just play what the phone says to play.

- The "track next" and "track previous" buttons actually work to select what tracks will play off the iphone! This didn't work on my older Kenwood 248U.

- Pandora seems to work well though the sound quality isn't as good.

This is my second purchase of an excelon and I love it. Love all the setting so I can fine tune it, not preset EQ. Bought as a gift but did the install myself. I will definitely by Kenwood excelon again.
