3.0 out of 5 stars Works OK, but interface is disappointing, August 12, 2010
By James R. Guibault (Algonquin, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kenwood Kiv-700 AM/FM/iPod(R)/iPhone(R) Receiver (Electronics)
I bought this receiver for one purpose: to play music & podcasts from my iPhone, while charging the iPhone. To that extent it performs just fine - the sound quality is decent, and the phone stays charged. The receiver's front panel is clean and simple, and fits in well with just about any car's dashboard. My beef is with the interface. For those of you accustomed to Apple's slick controls, this is going to be a huge disappointment. To perform nearly any function, you have to dig through nested menu after nested menu - otherwise it's just going to play everything on your iPod in alphabetical order, podcasts included. There seems to be no way to set a default playlist, and every time you start anew you have to reset the "Folder Random" setting or it's just going to play in alphabetical order again. Even changing radio stations requires at least three buttons or knobs, unless you use the included remote control. The remote is OK, but let's face it; anyone with kids is going to lose that remote in a week. Plus, the tiny buttons are even more of a distraction from driving than the receiver's balky menus.

I could be missing some cool setting that'll make this stereo do exactly what I want it to do, easily and by default every time I get in the car, but the clunky, incomprehensible owner's manual CD says nothing about such a thing. My recommendation: if you can get this receiver cheap, and that is more important to you than ease of use, go for it. If not, I'd try something else.
