Overall quality is in keeping with usual Kenwood.

He was even in a bad car crash that totalled the car, but he was able to pull it out and it still works as good as the day I bought it.
master chef
The screen display is vivid, and the controls are very easy to use.

This is an item I should wait until I have used it for a few months to rate. Well I have it installed and so far everything is working as it should. I have one beef that I wish Kenwood would address.. They have a heavy muti plug on the back for the video that has a small 1/4 by 1/2 inch plug that plugs into a small piece of the circuit board in the back. The plug don't lock and I'm very concerned that the pressure is going to damage the board, I right away had real problems as I was trying to figure out why the backup camera did not work and it was due to the cord bending on the board on the back of the unit. If this connection fails the unit will be worthless.

I got this for my husband for a wedding gift. He loves it and it works great! He was even in a bad car crash that totalled the car, but he was able to pull it out and it still works as good as the day I bought it.

Some issues with this unit but overall it functions pretty well.

CONS
1 - Sub Woofer control keeps turning off, for no apparent reason. The memory seems to not want to keep in the unit. Every once in a while the sub and audio controls will be greyed out and cannot be turned on.
2 - The angle of the monitor can be set, however the unit never remebers the last position and resets every time I turn it on.
3 - Pretty difficult to customize, the unit has 9 or so accessories that can be attached but you cannot disable the buttons if you dont have these devices so basically it goes to a blank screen, ie: Navigation bluetooth controls.
5 - USB must be USB 1 because it takes a long time to read the flash drive.
6 - Ipod classic and 1st Generation Iphone seem to freeze when using the Ipod controls.
7 - The unit shut off errantly a few times at the beginning but has'nt after the first week. This may have been because of a power wire that was not adequate. After changing to a larger power wire it seems to have resolved this problem.
8 - Hard to navigate the DVD menus unless you have the remote.

Pros
1 - Awesome picture for the DVD, playback is flawless.
2 - Sound quality is great, 0 distortion.
3 - Sub and EQ controls rival $300 units with the same functinality.
4 - Geat buy for the money since this same unit sells for $750 at Best Buy.

Well designed and does everything you want, but besides the price of the unit, expect to pay $450-$1200 for the additional wiring harness, modules, parts and labor to install. Wiring harness $80, Installation Gear $20, iPod Adapter $30, Antenna Adapter $12 and if your vehicle didn't already come stock with these modules: HD Radio Module $100, Satellite Radio Module $50, Navigation Module $300 and Back Up Camera Module $300. Don't forget labor, probably $275 a day to have a professional audio shop install.

Although an extremely techy person with over 20 years of computer/gadget experience, I've found that most of the cryptic features are just too much to figure out. Anything you look for in the manual refers you to another page/section... dog chasing its tail, that sort of thing. More specifically, you have to go backwards to go forward with anything you're trying to figure out! Also, this unit may be Kenwood's latest of its type, but it's out of date nonetheless. The screens have an old look to them and if you look at different, newer models, the screens are much nicer. Example, if you look on the screen at the satellite radio option, XM and Sirius are two different buttons...didn't they merge around six years ago?! I also have an issue with how long the unit takes to read my music collection on the usb port. I've also discovered the unit cannot read more than 250(?)songs so you have to create folders and split up your collection; and even if you select "play all" it only plays all in that folder, so you have to switch folders to hear more music. It seems to play DVDs fine, but that's the last thing I bought it for.

Now let's talk about the costly add-ons... The sound quality and overall operation of the Bluetooth phone module is far from perfect; the sound is like an old AM radio and people on the other end complain as well. There are also issues with the phonebook and speed dial features as far as downloading and retaining; and if you want to enable voice dialing, you have to go through a whole process for something that should be so very simple.

Then there's the Navigation module; the very first time I used GPS there were roads it couldn't find. I attribute this to the outdated map it comes with.

Very happy with this Kenwood product. The screen display is vivid, and
the controls are very easy to use. The potential for expanding with this unit
with add ons make it even more attractive.
I currently have the Garmin GPS navigation unit add on, and it works
flawlessly.

Good job Kenwood!

I used to have the kvt-696 and it was pretty fricken sweet. I feel bad I had to revert to the previous model kvt-516 but its virtually the same thing..thanks for having it.
