Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Like books in Joy Hakim's History of US series, this book in the Modern Nations of the World series is occasionally livelier reading than the drab black-and-white photos and densely packed pages suggest. Corona presents an upbeat but frank picture of a country that is the seventeenth-poorest on earth, where Nairobi's skyscrapers look toward the future, and fossils in Olduvai Gorge open windows to the distant past, and where a female mayor presides only a mile away from a hut where a girl's genitals are being mutilated. The book is organized along standard assignment lines (chapter one is about the land, chapter two is about the people, and so on), but it includes evocative passages from Isak Dinesen and novelist Ngugi wa Thiong'o, among others, and closes with a detailed, if unsourced, fact summary and annotated lists of books and Web sites. Other titles in this series are listed in the Series Roundup in this issue. John Peters
