Book Description

A funny new adult romantic comedy, Kept is the perfect novel for chick lit lovers! Kept was long listed in the Best Romantic Comedy category in the SpaSpa Book Awards 2013.

"Did she really just say that? I am fifteen again, except the reality is I am experiencing full parental horror, aged twenty-five. I want to die."

Life hasn't quite worked out how Arielle Lockley imagined it would. Becoming the next Coco Chanel was always her childhood dream, but she's spent the past four years living a dizzying whirl of glitzy parties, luxurious holidays and daily shopping sprees - all paid for by boyfriend Piers - and not doing anything to make her Coco dreams happen.

When the recession hits, it's not just the economy that takes a tumble and Arielle finds herself living back with her parents, on bad terms with Piers, and having a CV that's as welcome as a pair of knock-off Jimmy Choos. And maybe it's the location, but she's also finding unwelcome thoughts of her childhood sweetheart are popping into her head...

What's a girl to do? Can Arielle figure out what it is she now wants to do with her life and move on, or will she be doomed to spend the rest of her life dwelling over her worst mistakes, stuck listening to her parents' embarrassing dinner table talk each night?

A delightful romantic comedy, Kept is the funny chick lit book that is loved by Shopaholic and Bridget Jones devotees. New adult fans will love this coming of age series.

Editorial Reviews

Review

For chick lit and romantic comedy fans:

"Quirky, original chick lit with brilliant characters and a fab heroine... Highly recommend this and looking forward to reading more from Ms Field."
~ Shalini Boland, Author

"Kept is a brilliant début novel from Elle Field... Kept will appeal to readers of chick lit and I felt that it had a similar feel to some of Marian Keyes' early books. I think that Elle Field is one to watch out for and I would definitely read her next book."
~ Dot Scribbles, Book blogger

"I loved Kept! I loved the storyline which was a perfect read for me, I absolutely loved Elle's writing style; intelligent, witty and heart warming. For me she is very much like Lindsey Kelk (with tamer language)... Kept is a brilliant tale of self discovery with the added bonus of romance and fashion!"
~ Room for Reading, Book  blogger

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept June 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a copy of Kept by Elle Field in exchange for an honest review.

This might be a bit of a strange review, because I was kind of all over the place with this book. There were moments I loved, parts I disliked, areas where I was scratching my head, and then scenarios that made me laugh out loud. The bottom line - I enjoyed this book. Arielle was a funny character, someone who I thought of as unique and spirited. It was a little hard to really stand behind her when she did nothing but seemingly mooch off her boyfriend for four years, but I could see how Piers wasn't doing much to help that situation. Sometimes the romance between her childhood sweetheart tripped me up. I don't like to give anything away in my reviews, but the ending was where I was scratching my head. Sometimes I disliked too that everything was quite easy for her. I know we see her penniless and homeless for a few pages, but really, she was quite fine throughout the book. And even in the end when she wanted to do something on her own, an opportunity just fell into her lap. I liked that she ran with the opportunity and really worked hard at it, but still - she didn't have to do much to make it happen in the first place. With that being said, like I stated earlier, I enjoyed this book. I was sucked into Arielle's strange little world and I thought the writing was quite snappy and fast-paced. So even though I think I had a love/confusion relationship with Arielle, she still thoroughly entertained me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab Quirky Chick Lit August 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Quirky, original chick lit with brilliant characters and a fab heroine. I really enjoyed the author's writing style and loved that the story didn't end up going where I was expecting. The fashion snippets are great and I was so excited that the story was partly set where I live! Highly recommend this and looking forward to reading more from Ms Field.

This is a great book and fun to read. I loved the heroine even though I found Piers a little too perfect. It is well written and very humorous and I think the ending is great. I would definitely look for more from thins author in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not my usual type of book....Until now! March 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The first few pages had me thinking that I didn't want to finish this book. Nothing bad, just didn't seem my thing. However, I couldn't seem to stop reading it! I had a love-hate feeling about the main character. But watching her grow was truly enjoyable. One of the previous reviewers said she stopped reading it after 30 pages. I wish I could tell her that she should have stuck with it. I truly enjoyed it. I was slightly...ok greatly worried that it would turn out to be a "Muriel's Wedding" type of book but I still couldn't put it down. I can't wait for "Lost" to come out!! Thanks for a great story, Elle!! A great example of how you should reach outside of your self-imposed boundaries to read new styles and new authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Arielle is nicer than you think March 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Elle Field’s debut novel Kept deals with Arielle, a New Forest girl who found herself living in London without her dream fashion career, instead living off her (albeit very lovely) boyfriend Piers whilst also being haunted by her first love. After Piers kicks her out and she returns home, she realises she has next to nothing to her name…

Overall, Kept is as gripping and enjoyable a chick-lit book as any (I, like some others, go through fits of addiction and nonchalance towards the genre). With two men in the picture and a total lack of career starting point, there are two main areas of interest that we see Arielle tackle, even though the romantic ending is pretty predictable.

Arielle is relatable to many, in her inability to move on from a traumatic experience (a brutal break-up), her degree regrets and her efforts to keep it all together when down and out. (Admittedly she isn’t so relatable when Piers is paying her way for an easy, lazy life). Arielle’s problem is that her experiences with Piers in particular made her very snooty, stuck up and sure of herself even when she’s slunk back home. She gets angry and shouts self-righteously a lot, often annoyingly after she’s interrupted someone or prematurely jumped to her own conclusions. She talks about fashion non-stop but mocks Obélix for being boring. In short, she’s a spoilt brat who blames others for her bad decisions and is often very grumpy.

But that’s the concept of the book! Arielle does redeem herself at least slightly by the end, and obviously some people will like her more than others. I was particularly impressed when she gained the resolve to sort her life out- a lot of the negative points about her I just listed are negated by the end of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic read! March 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm not a big fan of chick lit because it can quite often be vapid and silly, but Kept by Elle Field is a refreshing and intelligent debut book in this genre and a real turn up for the books. Kept weaves skillfully in and out of the past to tell the story of Arielle Lockley - the "kept" woman in this tale - in such a captivating way that I just wanted to read on and on. It's funny, entertaining and a brilliant read. I can't wait to read the next book by Elle and find out what happens to Arielle next!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fashionista Arielle Lockley has lost her way... December 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Fashionista Arielle Lockley has lost her way. Aged 25, she’s just been thrown out of her very rich boyfriend Piers’ house with only a small bag of possessions, no money and no career history. And she has to return to the family home, which holds bad memories for her, as a very ashamed “kept” woman.

Things go from bad to worse but after sulking and licking her wounds, Arielle realises she has to make amends for her lost years. But what can she do with a degree in economics and no experience? And has she thrown away true love by taking advantage of handsome, loving Piers? Surely not, when she’s still in love with her teenage crush. Amidst the confusion and many wrong turns, Arielle starts to finally take responsibility.

I really enjoyed reading Kept but there were a few things that confused me. I couldn’t entirely love kind, generous Piers, who seemed to bully Arielle into letting him look after her for four years and then kicked her out and called her lazy once she’d given up trying to fight him. Also, I couldn’t get Piers Morgan out of my head so, for me, he wasn’t quite the swoonworthy hero I think the author had in mind. However, it was an interesting and witty look at what can happen to a woman who lets her past control her. Arielle’s journey was wonderful and I would have loved to have read more about her introduction into the fashion world.

This wasn't the best book that I've ever read, but not the worst either. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book though.

This book was okay but not a 'must' read. For me the main character, Arielle, was too flighty and wishy washy.
