Book Description

December 26, 1996
Now available for the first time in paperback, here is Tim Hunt's incisive look into Jack Kerouac's creative process and achievement. Debunking much of the mythology about Kerouac, Hunt shows the author of On the Road and Visions of Cody working out the literary strategies that link him to Herman Melville, Mark Twain, and other canonical American novelists. This is an essential book for anyone interested in Beat culture and Kerouac's conscious literary artistry.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"One leaves Tim Hunt's Kerouac's Crooked Road with the feeling that no one has ever really read such a familiar novel as On the Road before . . . . [This] is an enormously stimulating and rewarding study of a writer who may have been too quickly undervalued." -- Warren French, Studies in American Fiction

"[Hunt] demonstrates that Kerouac's fiction, unlike the commonly accepted notion of it as the work of a talented but undisciplined writer, is the result of labor and thought . . . [and] gives as lucid an explanation as I have seen of Kerouac's 'spontaneous prose' and 'sketching,' relating both of these to jazz and painting." -- The Review of Contemporary Fiction

From the Inside Flap

"This is decidely the best of the American books on Kerouac--smart, insightful, situating Kerouac firmly in the broader American literary tradition while remaining wonderfully alert to the themes and formal strategies that mark Kerouac's own highly innovative contribution to that tradition."--Ann Douglas, author of Terrible Honesty

5.0 out of 5 stars THE EXTRACTED BEST OF "ON THE ROAD", December 23, 2006
This review is from: Kerouac's Crooked Road: Development of a Fiction (Paperback)
This is a strange book. It reads more like a Jungian interpretation. I loved it, the way they basically did a compressed verision of On the Road linked together by a Moses-like point of view (no weider than the great book itself though). Very dreamy.
