Book Description

0965449769 978-0965449762 June 30, 1999
This book tells the story of Jack Kerouac's French-Canadian lineage from the time of the arrival of the first Kerouac in Quebec in 1730, to the emigration of Jack Kerouac's paternal grandparents from St. Hubert, Quebec to Nashua, New Hampshire in 1890, to his parents move to Lowell, Massachusetts and Jack's growing up days there. The second half of the book illustrates how Kerouac portrays various members of his extended family in his novels, and points to the impact of his French-Canadian background on his writing in general.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Rev. Stephen Edington digs into the Kerouac earth with enthusiasm. He sorts through the facts clinging to Kerouac's roots and adds to our understanding of the author's life and work. -- Paul Marion, Loom Press, Lowell, Massachusetts

From the Author

I've been a Kerouac afficianado since the late 1960's, and took up my research into Kerouac French-Canadian heritage sometime after moving to Nashua in 1988 to become the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua, NH. I'm a member of the Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! Committee which puts on the annual Jack Kerouac festival in Lowell every October; and I teach a course on "The Literature of the Beat Movement" at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
