Legal carry in California,
By PJ (Westcoast USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kershaw Clash (Sports)
I just had to respond to the review regarding its legality in California. As of 2011 this knife is in fact LEGAL to carry. A spring assisted knife is LEGAL as long as the operation involves the use of a stud, hole, disk or in this case a FLIPPER. As long as the opening mechanism is attached to the blade and not on the handle (like the old switchblades were deployed, a button on the side) it is in fact LEGAL to carry. Just had to clarify that to potential buyers of this, or any other assisted opening knife....

5 stars for value. For $23 you can't beat this knife. The reviews I've read are fairly accurate so I won't belabor the point. Opens fast, good blade shape, decent metal, plastic handle, one handed opening, good pocket clip, and a nice overall appearance. True it doesn't have the pricey look of my $100 knives or even the Kershaw Blur but it is still a great pocket knife. I got this for use as an EDC work knife. It has to clip over a zipper and I expect it's going to get beat up just in daily carry so I didn't want a knife that cost enough to make me worry about damaging it so in my case the cheaper plastic handle is a plus! This knife is perfect as a GOOD pocket knife that you can actually use and not worry about ruining a more expensive knife. Plus it definitely has a cool factor with the spring assist opening with the flipper. Overall, better than I was expecting.
* Had to amend my review. All the same comments as before still stand. However, after having the knife for 2 weeks or so of very light use I noticed rust spots. Just light spots but still. They are on the sides of the blade. Not enough to stop me using it as a beater knife, but just realize this isn't a knife that's going to last more than a couple years. It's definitely a cheap knife you can beat up and throw away when it's either too rusty or broken. Either way the flipper is still sweet and I like it, just would like it more if it hadn't started rusting on me.

Fantastic knife even for the money. Can't possibly go wrong with any product from Kershaw. Kershaw has a reputation for making quality knives for those with limited budgets. Excellent customer service. Now on to the knife:
Pros: -great worker -easy to sharpen -exceptionally durable (I've dropped it countless times on theh ground) -super fast deployment -quality steel -size and helft -pocket clip -Ken Onion style blade Cons: none Misc. NOtes: -flipper takes some effort to deploy blade. My finger was a bit sore for a while until i got used to it, now I don't even notice. I'VE GOT THE STRONGEST INDEX FINGER IN THE WORLD!!! -

Pretty Good, Sturdy EDC Folder,

I received this just the other day. Delivery was very prompt and the knife was new in its box as described. The knife has some good weight to it, which is something I prefer in a working EDC knife. The fit and finish were good overall. And the spring action worked well from the get go. The flipper is well-positioned and allows for easy access and grip from any average length index finger. Upon release, the blade deploys aggressively, with a nice thwack. Lockup is solid. There was no blade play at all. The action is not so sensitive, however, that you have to worry much about accidentally deploying the blade. You need some pressure on the flipper to extend the blade. The blade was fairly sharp out of the box -- and with some quick work on a pocket sharpener became much sharper. Overall, the knife is sturdy and well put together. The blade shape and length is perfect for a functional EDC knife. The belly of the blade is a bit rounded to allow for "heavier" cutting duties and there is a good amount of straight blade toward the handle to allow for finer work. Plus the blade shape looks good, too. The subdued blade color (from titanium coating) doeasn't look that great though. Overall, I would recommend this knife as a good purchase for the price... From a personal preference standpoint, I have several folding pocket knives. Some of them are better than others, but none of them are $150-200 dollar knives. They can all be used w/out worrying about ruining a pricey trophy knife. The Clash is one of the better ones. That said, I hate to even mention the minor flaws b/c it was so inexpensive, but the nylon handle is not that great or grippy. It is solid and sturdy, but it could have better feel to it. Closing the blade is also something you have to think about with this knife. That strong spring which deploys the blade so nicely is also the same spring that you'll be closing the blade against. Don't "baby" it or you'll lose some control over the blade or the whole knife. Takes a small amount of practice but you'll get it. Finally, the blade tip in the closed position extends just a bit from the end of the handle and could potentially catch on a pants pocket. Not a big deal though b/c for a folder, this knife is a solid worker. Buy it.

Not a 3 inch blade,

I like to keep my edc (every day carry) at 3 inches or under and many places advertise this knife at 3 inches. The blade actually measures 3 and 1/4 inches. It's a nice little knife for $20 so I picked it up when I saw the price drop. Very nice belly in the blade and opens with a pop. If it were 3 inches in length with g-10, lanyard hole and a little better jimping it would have made it the perfect edc 8(. I guess that would cost more than $20 though!

This is a good cheap, solidly made knife. Though I have not subjected it to any extreme abuse it remains sturdy and has held an edge well.
Some may find that it takes a little more effort to deploy than other knives. I personally like that because it doesn't seem ready to spring open in your pocket like some other knives with assisted opening mechanisms, but it is something potential buyers should be aware of. All in all it is a great every day carry knife, and you can't beat the price!

Awesome knife by Kershaw. Most people don't life the fact that this knife is made in China, but hey, if it puts a $22 price tag on a well made knife, so be it. Great for everyday carry, speed safe action is off the charts cool. Comes pretty damn sharp out of the box and it has the best clip out of any folder I've ever encountered. Great buy! You won't be disappointed.

The Kershaw Clash exceeded my expectations. It is a near perfect knife. And it only costs 20$! It is just the right size and the only thing bad i have to say is that it is on the heavy side( not a big deal). All in all a great knife and highly recommended.

I ordered this knife the same time that I ordered 2 other Kershaw knives. You know that old addage that goes "You get what you pay for"? Well, it's true. Pay mid $20's for a knife, and you get an average knife. Pay $100 for a damascus blade scallion, and you get a superb piece of engineering.
Don't get me completely wrong, this knife is a great $20 something knife. Better than any other $20 something knife I've owned, but it's still cheaply made. The plastic on the handle is too bulky making EDC much tougher than the thin profile of the Scallion. I still love the flipper on this blade, it just slings that edge out there as fast as can be. It'll definatley get used, I'll probobly toss it in my truck and leave it there until it's needed, but it'll never be an EDC knife for me. |
