I bought this knife about eight years ago. I am an industrial maintenance contractor and have it with me all day; every day. I use it constantly. I have bored holes in asphalt, cut rope, split wooden boards, cut a lotta lotta plastic sheet - all kinds from glass filled PET to nylon, HIPS, PE, PP, you name it. It has been under water, dropped in acid, soaked in all kinds of oil, and just all around abused. I have it clipped to my pocket right now.
The spring assist opening makes it really quick and sure to get the blade out. It opens all the way - every time. The spring in mine broke a couple years ago but I think it might have had something to do with that whole "dropped in acid" dealio. Even then, though, it opens very easily and locks open every time. Just a flick of the wrist and a nudge on the thumb peg and it is ready to go. I know I can have this knife open and cutting before a cheesy little switchblade is even halfway open.
The liner lock is sure and consistent. In the last couple of months mine has become worn to the point it doesn't hold as well any more but considering what the knife has been through, it has far out lived any reasonable expectations anyone could have had for it.
The outer casing is some kind of super plastic. I have worked in plastics for 20 years and this stuff is the bomb-diggity (as the kids today like to say). I think they call it Zytel or something but it takes a beating and doesn't show wear as much as the steel bolt heads holding it together. I etched my initials in the handle years ago and just about couldn't get it to etch in. The stuff isn't so much hard, as tough. It also has a good knurled grip pattern in it that has yet to wear down and compromise the "gripability" of the knife. Good stuff, that Zytel or whatever.

Kershaw makes a variety of high-quality knives for everything from camping/fishing, to general utility, to cutlery. I have owned several and have never been disappointed.

The Black Out is a great pocket knife, albeit a bit large to carry on a daily basis. It takes and holds an edge well, and the blade coating is more durable than most. It has an ambidextrous thumb stud and a liner-style lock. The handle is lightweight and fits well in the hand. The grip isn't as non-slip as the Trac-Tec models, but then again it doesn't feel like 80 grit sandpaper either. A half-serrated model is also available.

The Speed Safe feature, for those that have never seen it, is awesome. It keeps the blade securely closed until you're ready to use it, but once the knife is opened about a half-inch it snaps open with the slightest pressure on the thumb stud. Closing the knife is accomplished by a similar maneuver once the liner lock has been disengaged. It is by far the easiest one handed operation I have ever used.

I have always been familiar with and a fan of Kershaw knives. This latest edition the "Blackout" is an amazing knife with a shaving sharp blade right out of the box.

The speedsafe mechanism is truly amazing. Many of the so-called "assisted opening" knives have a spring that practically launches the knife out of your hand when opening. I had my son open this one and that is what he was expecting...but he was very surprised at the "controlled launch" of this knife. It is very smooth but still very fast!

The steel in these knives be it the Japan steel or the Sandvik steel as in the Blackout is top quality. The black coating on the Blackout is very tough and just wipes clean. Also, one important note...this knife is made in the good 'ol USA...not just another CHINA import that is normally junk...thanks Kershaw!

This is now my everyday carry knife and will certainly handle any chore...from slicing edibles to self-defense.

The best part of all is the Amazon had THE BEST price anywhere for this knife.

Thank you for continuing to stock great products like this one. Keep the Made in USA brands coming!!!

I wish I had 4 of them, even though it's totally unnecessary. They can cut anything, even tension between you and another person. Those "unbreakable" plastic products? Sliced in half. I even managed to literally split a hair. I cut a steak with it. Aluminum tie straps. Leather. The lining of my pants pocket. My toenails. I've even cut a couple of sentences short. If you have something to do, this knife will cut the time required to do that something in half. It's a very high quality knife that is sharp, sturdy, and easy to operate. The handle, though plastic, is like an industrial grade plastic that seems difficult to so much as get damaged. In all seriousness, I really like this knife and recommend it to anyone capable of handling its awesomeness. The blade is 3 inches of usable length and seems to stay clean very well. The speed safe is fantastic and the weight is perfect. By the time I finish writing this I will have decided on purchasing another one. It's that great. The other reviews are also pretty accurate if mine sounds a bit too good to be true.

I work in a factory and probably reach for my knife about fifty times a day. I've gone through several different permutations of multitools, folders, and even a few Swiss Army knives before finally going purist and settling on a simple blade. I decided to spend a little extra on the Kershaw line because I was impressed with the durability and ease of (instant) deployment the Whirlwind/Blackout offered. Sometimes you have barely one hand to spare and only a second in which to spare it and slipping a Kershaw out of the pocket that it's clipped to and flicking it open is the perfect solution.

I chose the Blackout line because it looked cool.

From the first moment you click one of these things out you know you're holding a quality tool that you can depend on to perform any job you put it to. It's solidly constructed with an ergonomic grip that can give you a little bit of leverage when you need it. I've had mine for about five years now and it's stood up to multiple instances of what can only be called abuse and it still performs magnificently.

The spring, or torsion bar as I believe it's called, is very dependable. Yes, it will wear out in time, but even when it does it still functions well if you adapt to the change.

I can't really comment on the self-defense applications of this knife as I've never used a knife on another living thing before, but I expect it would serve as well as any other blade.

Just two words of warning: 1. It's designed for easy one-handed closing, but you have to know when to move your thumb because the lock is directly in the path of the blade and can hit your thumbnail if you're not careful. It's rather unforgiving in that respect. This is extra important to bear in mind because warning number 2 is that these things come from the factory razor-sharp.

With a little practice, though, it will be second nature and will quickly become the most useful tool in your inventory.
