I like to carry a small knife around with me most of the time. And the Chive is an ideal knife for that purpose. With a 2 inch blade, it's not very big so you're not going to be able to use it for heavy-duty jobs. But the construction is solid, and the speed-assist mechanism means you can open it easily with just one hand. It is also very light so you will hardly notice it in your pocket. It has a frame-lock which I prefer to a liner-lock because in general frame-locks tend to be more secure. And it does have a clip so you can clip it to your pocket (you can also remove the clip with a Torx screwdriver size T-6). The steel used for the blade (420 HC) is not a super-high quality steel, but it's plenty good for most common everyday tasks. It does have a safety tip lock, although I found mine to be a bit loose and it has sometimes slipped into the "off" position. But the blade itself has never popped open accidentally even when the safety was off. Being that it is so small, it's not quite as comfortable to hold as a bigger knife, but for its size it is relatively comfortable. When I hold it, my pinky hangs off the edge, unlike a larger knife like the Kershaw Vapor that I can grip will all four fingers on the handle.

Update 9/24/2009
The torsion bar broke recently and I had to get it replaced. I'm a little bit disappointed it broke already because I didn't think I used the knife that heavily. However Kershaw has top-notch customer service. They'll either send you a replacement torsion bar for free or you can ship them the knife and they'll fix it and ship it back to you (you pay to ship them the knife but they'll replace the torsion bar and ship it back for free). I had them ship me the torsion bar and I replaced it myself, and I'm not that handy so it must not be too difficult. Props to Kershaw for standing behind their product and backing it up with great service!

I generally _always_ carry some kind of pocketknife or multi-tool with me, and ever since my father gave me this Ken Onion Chive- it's become the ONLY knife I carry 90% of the time. (the other 10%, I feel the need for the tools in my Gerber multi-plier) It's the perfect size for most tasks, and holds an edge seemingly forever. But that's not the best part. This knife has almost perfect ergonomics. Using the torsion-bar speed open, the knife flips open with just a small amount of pressure, and locks open positively. It can also be easily unlocked and closed with one hand, and there's a safety which keeps the knife closed. In fact, my only gripe with this knife is the safety- it's a tiny zytel plastic part held in place with a stainless screw- I've never been able to get it tight enough that it consistently stays in place, yet loose enough that it can still be easily slid off with one finger. Otherwise, I love it! It clips perfectly in the change pocket of my jeans, and I carry it everywhere (well, at least as long as I'm not flying).

I had been looking for a smaller every day carry (EDC) pocket knife that had some nice modern features (Kershaw's "flipper" assisted open)and this fits the bill. I wanted something that wasn't large and I could carry to the office everyday with out getting looks from non-knife folks. I did search You Tube knife reviews for months before deciding on this one. I weighed it against comparable SOGs, Bucks, Spydercos, ... It is razor sharp out of the box and opens extremely fast. My only complaint is that the clip doesn't sit as deep in the pocket as I would like. This is my first Kershaw knife, but it won't be my last. Plus, it is made in the USA.

Color: Olive Drab
So I'm sitting on the couch in a very comfortable reclined position with the television remote firmly in my control. Life is good. In comes the wife from visiting a friend of hers. She walks up to me with a level of confidence and determination and firmly states, "I want a knife." You cannot image the proud sensation I felt hearing such divine works from the woman I love. Yet, at the same time I was in complete disbelief. I carry knives on me all of the time and not once has she even expressed interest in carry a "blade." So, I quickly ask "what makes you want a knife" to which she replies "my friend has one and I like it." She stated, "It opens quick, I like it, and I want one." Does life get any better? I asked her to find out what knife it is and that I would get her one. My wife texts the friend but she doesn't know the knife model other than it is a Kershaw. After some research I discover that it was the Kershaw Scallion. Within minutes I ordered the knife for my wife. A monumental day indeed!!! Not to be outdone I had to order one for myself. The Olive Drab color is very nice. It is a bit too small for me so I keep it in a little hiking kit that I have as a backup knife.

The Kershaw Scallion, made in the U.S.A., is a very small knife that is perfectly suited to women looking for an unassuming knife. This knife is well suited for an everyday carry (EDC) knife for small tasks such as opening boxes, envelopes, cutting rope, etc. It is not designed as a defensive or fighting knife although it could be used for that purpose if you have nothing else.

Knife Stats:

+ Opening methods: SpeedSafe and Flipper
+ Safety Lock (prevents blade from opening)
+ Blade: 420HC stainless-steel
+ Blade Length: 2 1/4 in.
+ Closed Length: 3 1/2 in.
+ Weight: 2.
