I just had to respond to the review regarding its legality in California. As of 2011 this knife is in fact LEGAL to carry. A spring assisted knife is LEGAL as long as the operation involves the use of a stud, hole, disk or in this case a FLIPPER. As long as the opening mechanism is attached to the blade and not on the handle (like the old switchblades were deployed, a button on the side) it is in fact LEGAL to carry. Just had to clarify that to potential buyers of this, or any other assisted opening knife....

I received this just the other day. Delivery was very prompt and the knife was new in its box as described. The knife has some good weight to it, which is something I prefer in a working EDC knife. The fit and finish were good overall. And the spring action worked well from the get go. The flipper is well-positioned and allows for easy access and grip from any average length index finger. Upon release, the blade deploys aggressively, with a nice thwack. Lockup is solid. There was no blade play at all. The action is not so sensitive, however, that you have to worry much about accidentally deploying the blade. You need some pressure on the flipper to extend the blade. The blade was fairly sharp out of the box -- and with some quick work on a pocket sharpener became much sharper. Overall, the knife is sturdy and well put together. The blade shape and length is perfect for a functional EDC knife. The belly of the blade is a bit rounded to allow for "heavier" cutting duties and there is a good amount of straight blade toward the handle to allow for finer work. Plus the blade shape looks good, too. The subdued blade color (from titanium coating) doeasn't look that great though. Overall, I would recommend this knife as a good purchase for the price... From a personal preference standpoint, I have several folding pocket knives. Some of them are better than others, but none of them are $150-200 dollar knives. They can all be used w/out worrying about ruining a pricey trophy knife. The Clash is one of the better ones. That said, I hate to even mention the minor flaws b/c it was so inexpensive, but the nylon handle is not that great or grippy. It is solid and sturdy, but it could have better feel to it. Closing the blade is also something you have to think about with this knife.Read more ›

Fantastic knife even for the money. Can't possibly go wrong with any product from Kershaw. Kershaw has a reputation for making quality knives for those with limited budgets. Excellent customer service. Now on to the knife:

Pros:

-great worker
-easy to sharpen
-exceptionally durable (I've dropped it countless times on theh ground)
-super fast deployment
-quality steel
-size and helft
-pocket clip
-Ken Onion style blade

Cons:

none

Misc. NOtes:

-flipper takes some effort to deploy blade. My finger was a bit sore for a while until i got used to it, now I don't even notice. I'VE GOT THE STRONGEST INDEX FINGER IN THE WORLD!!!

Awesome knife by Kershaw. Most people don't life the fact that this knife is made in China, but hey, if it puts a $22 price tag on a well made knife, so be it. Great for everyday carry, speed safe action is off the charts cool. Comes pretty damn sharp out of the box and it has the best clip out of any folder I've ever encountered. Great buy! You won't be disappointed.

This is a good cheap, solidly made knife. Though I have not subjected it to any extreme abuse it remains sturdy and has held an edge well.

Some may find that it takes a little more effort to deploy than other knives. I personally like that because it doesn't seem ready to spring open in your pocket like some other knives with assisted opening mechanisms, but it is something potential buyers should be aware of.
All in all it is a great every day carry knife, and you can't beat the price!

See my pictures of the Clash next to an Emerson CQC-7 (made in Emerson's USA "small factory" vs. Ernie Emerson's customs). Both around 4 ounces, very similar blade lengths. Obviously a huge difference in pricing.

The Clash has a useful finger grip cut-out; the Emerson has a longer, grippier handle.

If you have an Emerson for edc, you might want a Clash for actual chores, to keep the wear off the Emerson. If you get attacked by a small, angry unarmed Middle Earth dwarf, you should be safe with either. Should be, but given the testy nature of Middle Earth dwarfs, no guarantees.

The Clash has tip up or tip down carry holes, BUT only on the palm side (right hand grip) of the handle.

Metal liners on both sides of the handle on the Clash (as on the CQC-7).

Unlike the extremely grippy G10 on the Emerson, the Clash uses smooth (not aggressively diamond-patterned) plastic handles; the mostly-cosmetic ridges on the Clash don't really improve the grip of its smooth, non-gritty plastic.

The assisted-opener on the Clash, which has typical Kershaw speed, is such a parlor trick the average guy could spend hours just playing with it while watching TV. In case you haven't tried one, after a medium amount of pressure on the rear flipper (present on this model) or on a thumb stud (not present on this model), once you are past the detent the blade flies open like the dickens. Snazzy!

The Clash uses fasteners rather than rivets or glue to hold the assembly together. My Torqx set worked fine on them.

Cosmetically the Clash is perfectly finished and assembled. The flipper is a little "pointy" on the finger but that's the nature of a lower-profile flipper.
