Product Description

The Kershaw Leek just may be the ideal EDC. With its 3-inch blade, the Leek is a good-sized knife, but not too big. The slim design makes it easy to carry and its razor-sharp blade of high-performance Sandvik 14C28N means it can take care of a full range of cutting tasks. The blade is a modified drop-point, so it's a good slicing knife, while the slim tip gives it piercing capability and the ability to do detailed work. For a partially serrated blade, choose the 1660ST Leek. Like other "Onion" knives, the Leek features the SpeedSafe ambidextrous assisted opening system. Whether you're left-handed or right-handed, just pull back on the blade protrusion or push outward on the thumbstud and the Leek's blade is ready to go to work. In addition to its 14C28N blade, this Leek features a handle of pure stainless steel that gives it a clean, sleek look. For confident blade use, a super-secure frame lock keeps the blade locked during use and a Tip-Lock slider locks the blade closed when folded. The pocketclip can be configured for tip-up or tip-down carry and the handle is drilled to accept a lanyard.

With a three-inch blade constructed of 440A stainless steel and a handle constructed of 410 stainless steel, Kershaw's Ken Onion Leek folding knife is sleek, indestructible, and razor sharp. Kershaw's flawless assisted opening system, SpeedSafe, assists the user to smoothly open the knife with a manual push on the blade's thumb stud or index-open system. In order to open the knife, the user must apply manual pressure to the thumb stud to overcome the resistance of the torsion bar. After the blade is out of the handle, the torsion bar moves along its track and takes over. The blade opens smoothly and locks into position, ready for use. Measuring four inches long when closed and weighing just 3.1 ounces, this versatile knife includes a limited lifetime warranty.

I purchased this knife at a gun & knife show three years ago and have carried it everyday since. I've owned ($60.00) Spyderco and ($150.00) Benchmade (Automatic) knives, but this Stainless Leek model is slimmer, quicker to draw and has a better clip than both of these knives. Because of the unique spring action mechanism, many think it's an "automatic" knife. My only recommendation is to occasionally lubricate/clean the mechanism to keep the action quick. I did have to tighen the allen screw to keep the safety from slipping "on" in my pocket. I will be ordering a second one at this price. This is a very well designed, well made pocket knife.

I have a lot of knives, among them Benchmade, Beretta, CRKT ... but this Ken Onion Leek may be THE sharpest knife I have ever purchased. Aside from all the other great features you will read about in these reviews (they're all true) it simply has a razor edge that is a box cutter's equal. I have been developing my knife sharpening technique with a diamond stone and a steel for years now, and I can put an amazing edge on a knife. But not quite like this - this is a true razor's edge. It starts to cut you the instant you test it.

I got my Leek because I wanted an every day carry knife with a "stay closed" safety, so it only opens when I want it to. I wear my knife hanging off a carabiner with my keys, and sometimes my old Beretta would come open when sliding into or out of my truck, for example. So I love that this has a tip safety. And for sure, the Speed Safe torsion opener is waaaaay cool. It's the closest thing to a switchblade I've ever tried.

And major kudos to Kershaw for really putting a pro edge on this blade. A "criminal edge" - because it's "sharper than the law should allow". Have fun and be careful.

This is actually my second Leek. I got the first one right after they came out. I used it and the current one daily from everything from opening letters to dressing game. Finally the torsion assist got weak from thousands of openings and I returned it to the factory for replacement of the spring. I didn't want to wait 6 or 8 weeks for it's return so I went ahead and bought another one before sending the old one off. Kershaw says it's good for 10,000 openings and I'm sure I had that many on it. Anyway it's just the right size for me, light, slender and the pocket clip keeps it securely in my pocket where it's readily available. Kershaw knives are the sharpest knives I've ever owned and these are no exception. They are literally razor sharp when you get them. The assisted opening works very well. You can flip the thumb stud on the blade or press the projection of the blade on the back of the knife for easy and fast one handed opening. It's always convenient of course but especially so in working in the shop or say cutting line when fishing. One hand is tied up holding the rod, you can open the Leek with the other hand and use it. They are very well made, US made I might add and that matters to me anyway. It's a fine little knife. I carry mine 100% of the time.

For an update Kershaw replaced the knife with the broken torsion assist at no charge so I've got two of them now. DLT 8/24/09

I received my Leek 10 days later... and I love it~! On first sight, I decided to reverse the belt clip but the screws came out completely stripped and unusable. A web form on Kershaw's site was answered within the hour and new screws arrived (free) with belt clip (which I didn't need) in 3 days time.

Been carrying the Kershaw 1660 Leek 24/7 and have found it to be a "gentleman's knife" due to it's difficulty gripping in adverse conditions. This is one of my first EDC knives with a non-serrated blade and I like it's practical edge. It's silver color and smaller size make it less conspicuous to the public eye.

The 1660 is fast to open and cuts cleanly out of the box - SHARP~!
It's sharp due to the factory sharpening method which is micro-serrations.. basically, as all blades under close inspection are serrated, the factory technique can use some polishing but comes wicked sharp.

I enjoy carrying and using this blade. My comments would be:
* It's not for wet hands. It takes a firm pinching grip between thumb and fingers while activating blade... which at times of haste comes very close to touching my palm... so it's not a knife to pull out and use in a hurry. Yes, it's very quick but this is mostly a "pocket knife" with the novelty feature of assisted opening. It's not a tactical folder and it's not easily held for demanding tasks... it's shiny and slippery and should be used for EDC common tasks.
* The belt clip makes the knife ride quite high on the pocket, revealing a lot more knife than I'm accustomed to. I do like the accessibility but it plainly shows. With clip reversed, so it rides tip up, it rides even higher..

I really wanted to be impressed with this knife. I loved the look of the profile, and reviews spoke glowingly about the action and sharpness.

I took the clip off the side, because I don't generally like pocket clips. Unfortunately, with this model, taking the clip off means that the corner of the edge of the clip that stops the frame-lock from overextending goes with it.

Check out the fragment of the image I stole off another customer image to see how the clip overlaps to prevent overextending this liner lock. I circled the problem area in red.

Without that frame lock, I accidentally bent the lever too far, then the knife wouldn't lock out anymore. I think I could have fixed it by disassembling the knife and rebending the frame myself. It only took hand strength to bend the framelock in the way I did so it probably wouldn't take much to correct it, aside from taking apart an assisted opening knife I know little about. I could still get the knife to lock by manually bending the lock into place after it was open, but even after letting it sit for about an hour in the locked position, the bend to cause it to spring into lock didn't come back.
