4.0 out of 5 stars Great knife, weird handle texture (smoked finish), July 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kershaw Leek Smoked Anodized (Sports)
This knife has many positives, which are covered thoroughly by other reviews. In short, this knife came razor-sharp right out of the box, and the SpeedSafe mechanism is the smoothest and easiest assisted-opening mechanism I've encountered (I also own a Gerber 22-41525 Mini-Fast Draw Spring Assisted Opening Stainless Steel Serrated Knife, and have looked at equivalent offerings from CRKT and Smith & Wesson, and the Kershaw mechanism is much simpler to deploy.) The Leek's ergonomics are also pretty good, although the safety is not placed in the most convenient location for my smallish hands. Overall, this is an outstanding folding knife, yet I'm sending it back.

About four years ago, I bought a Kershaw Chive Clam Pack Md: 1600X.. Now, I purchased the Leek with the black/blue smoked handle, assuming the Leek's handle would have the same texture as my Chive, overlooking that the standard Chive handle is made of 410 stainless steel, while the black/blue Leek is made of "smoked" double-anodized aluminum. The decorative "smoked" finish seems to give the handle the texture of a chalkboard, which was rather uncomfortable for my fingernails while manipulating the knife. This is most likely a personal preference issue, but I think it's worth mentioning, especially for preexisting Kershaw owners looking to augment their collecting with the black/blue "smoked" Leek.

I will most likely purchase a Kershaw Ken Onion Leek Folding Knife with Speed Safe (with the standard stainless steel handle) as a replacement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very, Very, nice, December 22, 2005
This review is from: Kershaw Leek Smoked Anodized (Sports)
A great little knife. Flat and light enough to fit the pocket of even dress pants. Springs open at a touch and has a safety to keep that from happening in your pocket. I would have given it 5 stars except the blade could be made of a higher carbon steel. It will be in my pocket every day.

Just received this knife and I love it.
Awesome finish (black/blue) and functionality.
Can't stop 'playing' with it.

This knife is great and very handy. Opens very easily and has capability of razor sharp edge. Can't really speak to long term durability - haven't had it quite long enough. But I can say it holds its edge through a good amount of use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great everyday use knife, January 10, 2012

This review is from: Kershaw Leek Smoked Anodized (Sports)
A friend introduced me to this knife and by the next week i had one of my own, it was that good.

Right out of the box the knife was extremely sharp and ready to go to work. The Speed Safe mechanism is built of awesomeness. It flips out smoothly and completely every time, i was a bit skeptical thinking that over time the Speed Safe mechanism would wear down and not push the blade completely out as it did when first out of the box...but it holds up surprisingly well. I know someone who has had this knife for well over a year using it daily and it still performs as beautifully as it did brand new.

I have owned many Gerber's and Swiss Army knifes and one of my pet peeves is the pocket clip. They always seem to wear out and break off over time. I am a larger man and i prefer to clip my knife on my pocket from the inside so it is easily accessible. My last two $70 Gerber's had a broken clip after a month or two of use. This Kershaw has a thin but beefy clip that looks up to the job.
For a knife of this size it is thin and fits great in my main pocket or even the change pocket on my pants. The safety takes a bit of getting use to with its location being all the way at the bottom but i am able to disable it with my ring finger as i pull the knife from my pocket so its not much of a hassle. However someone with smaller hands might struggle undoing the safety, most likely resorting to using both hands. I have heard some complaints about the smoked handles feel, it is really growing on me. Smooth stainless steel handles tend to get slippery under wet or moist conditions where as this smoked surface still feels secure and the last thing you want is a knife this sharp slipping from your grip. I wouldn't go as far as saying to feels like the surface of a chalk board, its a much more toned down than that. It doesn't bother my hands or nails when they happen to glide across the surface as a chalk board would.

Overall its a great feature rich knife at a great price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just One Major Drawback, December 7, 2011

I've had the knife for over a week now and it sits in my pocket unseen by everyone I come in contact with. It's razor sharp and the design is perfect for what it is. The major problem comes in when I take the knife out for menial tasks. If you have large hands, and I do. It's a bear to open. Outside of that, it rocks.

Wonderful knife, sharp enough to shave the hair off arms and legs, but haven't tried it on my beard. Beautiful multi-colored handle, very nice blade and excellent customer service/support from Kershaw. Great addition to my collection of knives and I use it as an EDC.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great knife for a great price., November 28, 2009

For me this knife handle is very small for my hands I just have to use caution when opening, once opened I can deal, clip is well placed, and knife size is pefect for my pocket as far as an everyday light duty knife. I can easily forget it is even in my pocket, which is what makes me like this knife so much. In addition the knife is very sharp, and has a brilliant built in safety which I use always. If this blade came open in someones pocket it wouldn't be good especially sitting down and standing up or sliding in a car seat with some nice leather seats.

I plan to buy several more of these knives for gifts and personal use. I love the color variety and price. awesome!

I wish the blade was a little thicker/heavyduty but for this price tag I can't bitch about it.

This is one great pocket knife, extremely sharp and very well made, opens as quickly as an automatic and can even be kept in your pocket with the safety off. Great for personal protection or for use around the house (I use it for scoring bread dough . . . cuts like a razor). I bought one for myself, then gave it to my son and bought myself another Leek.
