Kershaw knows how to make good knives, and the Shallot is no exception. I previously had a now-discontinued Kershaw similar in size to the Scallion, which is quite small. Wanting a larger knife that still had the slick SpeedSafe one-hand assisted open feature, I decided on the Shallot and I have been very happy with it.

I'm no knife expert, so I can't comment on the steel used, the blade hardness, or the edge-holding properties, but I can plainly observe both a primary advantage and disadvantage to the curved blade edge. The benefit is that this allows for a longer cutting surface in the same overall blade length. The downside is that sharpening the knife is considerably more difficult than with a straight blade edge. I have not tried sharpening it yet, but I might take it to the Kershaw plant for that.

The SpeedSafe feature works very well. This knife is much larger and heavier than the previous model I had, and the action is noticeably slower due to blade inertia, but not to the point of being problematic. Adding a wrist flick to the equation may or may not speed it up, although it makes it seem more decisive. With a little practice, the lock can be released and the knife folded back up with one hand, as well. It is interesting that, rather than using a liner lock like my previous smaller Kershaw, the Shallot's locking bar is actually part of the outside of the handle. There is no safety on this, which is fine. As another reviewer said, that kind of defeats the purpose of one-handed opening.

The Shallot is a little large for an EDC (every-day carry) pocketknife, but I do it anyway. The large pocket clip works well, and the knife isn't too obtrusive to me when I'm wearing it.

I received this knife as a gift and it's absolutely beautiful. It is precision made with high quality materials throughout. The attention to detail results in a solid knife that opens with authority. I don't have to check that the blade is safely locked in place, I can tell by the way it snapped open. One handed opening is a breeze (one handed closing takes practice but can be mastered). The blade came sharp from the factory and it holds an edge well. I've had it professionaly sharpened once in just over 12 months of use. It might be my EDC (every day carry) except for the blade is over 3 inches and thus not legal for pocket use in my neck of the woods. My only complaint is the brushed stainless steel handle is slippery when wet.

What can I say about this knife. I mean first of all, just look at it. It just looks bad-ass! Secondly, it comes razor sharp! the blade might be a little too long for practical use at 3.5 inches. But hey, I think it's worth it. The knife is very comfortable to hold in the hand, but may be a little too smooth. The assisted opening works fast and smoothly. I found that this knife will dull pretty fast, so I would invest in a good knife sharpening kit.

This knife is sweet! Great size, feels really sturdy, opens quick and locks in place really tight. It has a strong pocket clip and is great to carry with as slim as it is. Knife came sharp as heck! Would definitely recommend!

It's a little heavy, but well balanced and feels good in the hand. I love it, the quality is there and you can feel it.

I've had several of these knives. I lose them regularly. This one does not spring completly open and lock. To bad, because all the others have been good.

I can't give Kershaw enough praise for not only this knife, but pretty much all of their USA made folders. This knife is solid. The reason I got this guy is because I really loved my Kershaw Leek but it was too small for certain tasks. The 3.5" blade on this bad boy is as functional as it is cool looking. It appears that they clipped off the part of the blade that usual has a thumb stud attached, giving it a curved look. Getting used to not using the thumb stud was annoying but I've gotten used to it after about a week. Now I wear this big boy in my front pocket and little brother Leek in my back. I'm still debating wether or not this knife would be a good knife in self defense because there is no thumb stud causing you to have to adjust grip after deploying the blade with the flipper. The blade certainly is big enough to inflict a bad cut but wether or not the blade will be open and ready for action in time I'm unsure of. Perhaps other people have gotten fast deployment down on this thing. Anyway it's an extremely HIGH VALUE (this knife deserves caps) knife this knife is meant to last and its blade will NOT play no matter what I do. Ever. If you read this far into my review you must be serious about buying this so go buy it. Now.

Compact, easily useable and keeps a great edge. Ken Onion has created another masterpiece with the Shallot just like his Santuko which he made for Shun.
