Product Description

For this one, we've peeled away the layers, leaving nothing but superb form, keen function, and pure stainless steel. The Shallot features a Sandvik 14C28N recurve blade. The unique recurve blade design provides for low mass and high performance, while the 14C28N steel offers excellent hardness, corrosion, and wear resistance. This high-carbon chromium steel provides for a high quality blade ideal for a wide range of both everyday and extraordinary tasks. The Shallot is available with a smooth blade and a partially serrated blade. This exceptional blade is partnered with a sleek stainless-steel handle designed for a sure, ergonomic grip. The handle is built of 410 stainless steel, hardened and tempered to provide maximum strength. For safety, there's a convenient frame lock to secure the blade in position until you choose to release it. Both blade and handle are polished to a steely matte-gray finish. Or, if you prefer the dark, choose the Black Shallot, with a smooth or partially serrated blade featuring a Tungsten DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating. All Shallots feature our SpeedSafe ambidextrous manually assisted opening. Just pull back on the blade protrusion with the index finger of either the left or right hand. The SpeedSafe system then moves the blade out of the handle and smoothly and easily into position, ready for use. The Shallot is a pocket-perfect 4-3/8 inches closed and weighs just 4.2 ounces. It is made in the USA and built to uphold Kershaw's high standards of quality and performance. Like the tasty shallot it's named for, the new Kershaw Shallot is sure to make your mouth water for more.

Ordered this as a "big brother" to my Scallion folder that I carry every day at work.
I could not be more impressed,Fit and finish are better Than the Lone-Wolf folder
I paid twice as much for.Light weight and carries better than any other knife of this size that I own,
hardly noticeable.Action is smooth and crisp with a solid lock every time, balance point is at the finger indent.
Comfortable in the hand and as with every Kershaw knife, shaving Sharp right out of the box.
I have had a chefs knife in my hand every day for over 35 years and have collected folders and pocket knives longer than that.
Take it from someone who knows, this knife is an excellent choice.

Razor sharp out of the box. Excellent quality. Fast, smooth opening. Chose this over a SOG Twitch XL and glad I did.

I have owned several knives from Kershaw and CRKT and various other assisted opening pocket knives.
I have found knives I found flaws with and others that are not really flawed but just don't meet my needs.

With the USA Kershaw Black Shallot with DLC coating I have found the following.

THE BLADE: I really like the length and shape of this blade. I also like the coating on the knife, it both looks good and will help the longevity. It comes out of the box very sharp. Really nice. Also like the material, with this metal it should stay sharp a long time and resharpen easily. Kershaw will even sharpen it for you if you send it in to them. When open it does not have much play between it and the handle. It is relatively thin material which would dictate how heavy duty use it can withstand.

THE HANDLE: The handle is made of smooth metal, it is matte with the DLC coating but still does not lend itself to the best gripping surface. If it were to get wet it would be even worse. Depending on your use this may or may not be an issue, just something to consider. While it is a fairly thin, small handle it still fits in my hand pretty well. It does have a good indent for your index finger and a bit of a guard underneath which are nice but I don't think this results in a strong grip.

THE ASSISTED OPENING: First realize that this knife only opens via the flipper. There is no thumb stud. For some this is fine, for others it is an issue. Know this before ordering one. How fast you need to open the knife and how well you can do that with the flipper and transition to a good grip in your hand is something to think about and differs from person to person.

I love this knife. It stays sharp, is light weight but strong. I'm a geologist, and have it on me 24/7 and it comes in so handy. I use it in the field, and at home to open mail and stuff.
Just try not to get sand in it or the spring release will get a little less springy - I'm sure this could be easily fixed but I managed to drop mine in the bottom of a river before I had time to find out. Ordered another one right away though - great knife. A little big for small hands (I'm a girl) but you get used to it and I wouldn't want a smaller one.
I would buy it again... well, I did. It's awesome. Best knife ever. Buy it.

Very good full-size folding knife; the metal handle gives it a nice heft in your hand and the opening mechanism is butter-smooth and feels great.

The only thing I don't love about this knife is that the black oxide coating does wear on the edges and if you scratch it with anything hard. The first time I noticed it I was disappointed that the knife was no longer "new" looking, but I might change my mind later to consider it "character".

The Black Shallot is a typical Kershaw Assisted-Opening knife in terms of quality and construction. One of the larger Ken Onion knives, it still maintains a sleek profile thanks to the frame lock design. Blade and handle finish was consistent, and was complimented by the matching pocket clip (delivered with the clip attached for point down carry, but the frame is drilled for tip up carry as well).

One of the reasons I chose the Shallot was the aggressive blade design as oposed to the tapered blade on the slightly smaller Leek model. I found the AO blade operation on the Shallot to be quite slow as compared to the smaller Kershaw Ken Onion knives or competing products from Gerber. I found it necessary to add a bit of wrist flip to the opening motion to ensure that the blade consistently opened fully in the locked position. I would have preferred a more snappy action like that on my Gerber Covert, which is a similar size.

The only other minor gripe I have is that I wish the pocket clip was attached a little higher on the frame, with a rounded-style deep clip. The Shallot's pocket clip is the older design that Kershaw has used for many years - it works just fine, but doesn't seat the knife as deep as I like. All in all, I'm not disappointed, and pleased with the purchase.

**UPDATE**
I'm now 6 months in with this knife and it is a quality item. The black finish has held up surprisingly well- it looks almost new, despite being carried and used all day every day. Even the blade finish is still clean and un-marred. It's held an edge really well and the assisted open is clean and snappy as the day it came out of the box. The opening mechanism has softened somewhat, making one-handed closing much easier.

**ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW**

I had wanted a knife with true assisted open for a while. I always have a knife with me and it seems like every time I need it it's in a situation where opening it one handed is really helpful, if not a necessity.

This one fits the bill nicely. The opening mechanism is snappy without feeling like it's trying to fling the knife out of my hand. It's got just enough heft to feel nice and solid in the hand (yes the handle is metal, I know it doesn't look like it in the photo.) It's got really nice ergonomics all around. The blade shape looks like it may be a purely aesthetic choice but the curve at the back makes a comfortable spot to put your thumb the back of the blade for control. The ability to change where the clip is positioned to have it hang point up in your pocket is a nice addition and makes it easier to access. I wish it had come like that from the factory! Speaking of factory features, this one comes sharp! I know some knifes seem to be dull when you first open them and need sharpening right away. This is not one of those It comes out of the box *sharp.*

At first I missed the thumb studs on my Gerber knife because I had gotten used to opening it that way.
