Does everything it promises - super simple to use.,
This review is from: Kestrel 2000 Pocket Thermo Wind Meter 2011 (Sports)
I bought this Kestrel for windsurfing in order to get a better idea of what wind strengths I use certain sails in.
I emailed Kestrel about just how waterproof the Kestrel 2000 actually is and they told me (emailing me back within 24h) it was IP67, which means it can be submerged underwater at 1m for a total of 30mins. This is great as it means I can take the Kestrel with me on the water to measure the wind/temperature on the water, which can differ quite a bit from measurements on the beach. As promised the impeller picks wind up as of 0.8knots, which is much lower than I would need for windsurfing. The menu is super simple and easy to navigate, you can get to whatever information you want really quickly and the backlight works well. I also love how you can change the impeller simply by pressing it out, which is a really great feature as I imagine the impeller could easily get knocked out of balance. The only thing I would've liked is to have the beaufort scale like on other brands indicated in a sort of ladder format on the side while you look at other information. However, changing the the units is so fast that this really isn't a problem. All in all, if you want a good anemometer for watersports, where temperature and windspeed are the main conditions you'll be worried about, look no further.

Kestrel 2000 Thermo Wind Meter,
This review is from: Kestrel 2000 Pocket Thermo Wind Meter 2011 (Sports)
I use the Kestrel 2000 Thermo Wind Meter to determine wind speed for long range target shooting and varmit hunting. I was amazed at how easy it is to use and how well it works. I use the wind meter in conjunction with a laser range finder and a ballastics chart that I have taped to my rifle and just dial the scope in for each shot. This system takes most of the guess work out of each shot. The wind meter is well made and works as advertised. I would highly recommend it to anyone who may have a need for one.

The Kestrel 2000 is a nifty, no nonsense, intuitive, straight forward, wind and temperature instrument. Minimalist means less to go wrong. Primary use is for snowkiting and paragliding. Sometimes, just feeling the wind can determine go, no-go, but putting numbers to it can help perceptions improve. In the area of kiting, it helps in selection of the right sized model for conditions. Life is easier.

Good for measuring wind speed but not good at temperature readings,
This review is from: Kestrel 2000 Pocket Thermo Wind Meter 2011 (Sports)
I bought the Kestrel 2000 Pocket Thermo Wind meter for my business and liked the ability to review the average wind speed as well as the maximum windspeed, but the thermometer fluctuates so much that I never felt comfortable with the reading. I relied on the thermostat in my car to give me that reading. It is too bad because the concept of having both readings available is great. Another thing that could be approved upon would be to give a clear button so that you can erase the previous wind readings without having to turn the unit off.

I bought the Kestrel 2000 to aid me with windage compensation for distance shooting. I did some research before making my selection. Menus are simple and straighforward. Works as advertised and meets all expectations. While I don't really need the temperature function, I found it useful on a recent winter hunt. I'd recommend this to shooting buddies.

I am a model airplane and helicopter pilot, and I picked up one of these to read the wind speeds before (and during) flying. It fits perfectly in my flight box and works very well. You'll be surprised at how wrong you are about estimating wind speeds. The slightest breeze that kisses your face will be a 5-7 MPH wind, and that thunderstorm that is about to roll through your area is only blowing at 25 MPH, not the 40+ you originally thought. Great little device.

The Model 2000 wind meter is well-made, a snap to use, measures up to 90mph (at which point, you AND the meter are in danger of being blown away), and looks cool with its re-designed housing and case. Realize that this is an expensive TOOL, and not a TOY. There are cheaper anemometers out there, if quality isn't an issue. And, they aren't able to measure wind speeds over 50 or 60mph. But, if you're serious about wind speeds like, say, a weather aficionado, or a tornado chaser, this unit is for you.

So far; so good!,

Although I have not used the Kestrel 2000 while sailing, I have been able to anticipate the sailing conditions by using it on a promintory that eliminates variant cross winds, etc. So far it has functioned as anticipated. As far as it being waterproof, I have decided not to challenge that possibility.

The temp response time is about 1/10 degree per 2 seconds. If you need a faster response time try another manufacturer. Also, the impeller rattles above 7mph.A waste of time to use and a waste of money.
