Product Description

In 2000, we introduced the Kestrel 4000 Pocket Weather Tracker, and today it is still the most comprehensive pocket weather meter on the market. For just under 4 ounces, you get every environmental reading with the press of a single button. The 4000 is unparalleled in its ease of use and totally customizable navigation and data display. In addition to measuring the current conditions, it tracks and stores up to 2000 sets of data, and data can be uploaded to a PC with the optional Kestrel Interface. Durable? You bet. The 4000 has been subjected to impact, water submersion and extreme temperature tests, and keeps on working. Kestrel 4000’s have been put to the test in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. U.S. Special Forces, combat weather teams, wildland firefighters, smoke jumpers, Mt. Everest expeditions and IRL pit crews are just a few who rely on a Kestrel 4000 to provide them with the crucial environmental data they need. Watch the Weather Channel during a hurricane, and you’re sure to spot a Kestrel 4000 being wielded by an intrepid on-screen meteorologist. Due to popular demand in a range of applications, the Kestrel 4000 is available in Gray, Olive Drab, and Safety Orange.

3.0 out of 5 stars 4000 vs 4500 are 4 years apart, December 14, 2008
I bought my 4000 about 4 years ago - since then they may have updated the firmware but it had one nasty bug. If you wanted a continuous plot over time (days lets say) you had to leave the 4000 turned on continuously to gather data. That meant batteries - LOTS of batteries, even though it ran for 3 days on 2 ea AAA cells. It also meant alot of use of the battery door, which has a firm gasket to weatherproof the unit.

In short, the battery door proved to be a weakness - I had an OD and a bright orange unit - both failed on the battery door. Due to the glued up housing design the broken part made the units unrepairable.

Today the 4500 model is available for $35 more and includes many more features, like a compass, and the ability to have the unit power up, take readings, and power down every 30 minutes. So far after 10 days, mine has only used 3% of the batteries taking measurements every 30 minutes for detailed plots of pressure, altimeter, wind speed, and a half dozen other variables.

The 4500 represents the state of the art system which is why I purchased it after destroying two 4000's. You can find the 4500 here:

Kestrel 4500 Pocket Weather Tracker. They also make an OD green version, however the backlight is optimized for night vision goggles which means ordinary eyesight won't see much at all. Unless you are using it with a $4K set of an/pvs-xx goggles then you should buy the yellow cased version which has ample brightness for night use.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Little Weather Station, November 12, 2005

This is an excellent portable weather station. We take it camping, boating, even hiking. Very small and lightweight. Fits in your pocket. Batteries last forever. For anyone who is interested in the weather, this is a must. Cost is certainly prohibitive, but it is a highly technical gadget that monitors wind speed, temp, barometric pressure, altitude, heat index, humidity, wind chill, time and date. You can set it up to take readings on a specified interval and can view the data in graphical format or by the numbers. Highly recommended product. We've had ours for about 2 years and have not had any problems with it. QUALITY!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine instrument, June 14, 2008
This is the second Kestrel 4000 I've purchased. My brother, who is 4000 miles away in HI has has my first. I'll never see IT again (orange) Anyway, this unit is outstanding. Very accurate and provides you with all the air information except the direction it's coming from. Hopefully you will know that as forecasting depends on direction too. I feel the most outstanding feature on the 4000 is the recording ability of this unit. The barometric pressure can (user adjustable) be recorded in time intervals. You don't have to be outside in bad weather. I believe it can hold several hundred readings then stop or write over the earliest. Date and time are recorded as well. Reviewing the recorded graph, gives you a mental picture of a front approaching and passing through an area. You can sort of relive the big wind, lightning, and rain just before the storm! There are a lot of user defined parameters on the 4000. Its not hard to adjust, and can be changed according to what you need to know. There is back light for night operation, but you need to be familiar with the button placement as they don't light up. If you are a weatherwise person, as most are otherwise(Ben Franklin), you will enjoy this marvel of technology for years. It is well made, and supported. It is not inexpensive, but precision instruments never are, and as such should be treated with care and attention. (don't leave it near your brother)
