Having never written an Amazon review before, I felt compelled to assist any individual who (like me) was potentially shifting back and forth on the idea of spending more money on a bicycle than some people will willingly spend on an old junker automobile. The short answer is that this bike is worth every penny, and that the $1400 I paid for it was really quite a steal for a bike of this quality.

Now, I have only ever owned Walmart quality bikes in the past (never spending more than $250) and have found them suitable for everyday riding either on the street or on trails. But having moved to Atlanta earlier this year, and switching to cycling as my main form of exercise and commuting, I found riding such a bike to be rather lacking in overall efficiency (both in speed and energy spent/calories burned). I decided to get a bike that was designed for the street and could better handle the sharp inclines of the hilly Atlanta cityscape. This led me to searching through Amazon reviews, bike magazines, online forums, and local bike shops to figure out what would be the best deal I could get for a long term high quality bike. I spent a long time debating over whether to get an aluminum, steel, carbon fiber, or titanium frame(the latter 2 being considered higher end). In reality I don't think there is a "best" option regarding material...some are definitely more light weight (though not by all that much), and the only people that the difference really seems to matter to are hard core triathlon competitors. My advice (and what I did) is to test ride bikes of different material at your local bike store. I personally preferred the feel of the carbon fiber frames I tested...

At this price point, you will be hard-pressed to find a better overall value. With a full carbon frame (both 700 and 800), carbon fork, and mostly Shimano 105 Groupset (along with Tiagra components to keep it economical), this is an excellent bike to either begin road biking or as a first "step-up" bike. My only complaint is that the brakes leave a bit to be desired. I swapped the stock Oval brake set for Shimano 105 calipers and Kool-Stop brake pads and I highly recommend this upgrade. The wheelset (Oval 327s) are fairly lightweight and are just as good as the Shimano R500 wheelset that I intended on pulling from my prior bike to add. The wheelset, however, will be the next upgrade for me. Other recommended items that I've made in the short week that I've owned the Talon 105:

- Tiago Spyder TwinTail Saddle (Great)
- Shimano 105 Pedals
- Black and White 3T LTD handlebar tape
- Shimano 105 brake calipers and Kool-Stop brake pads
- Quad Lock iPhone 5 Holder (Amazing Product)
- Specialized Rib Cage Bottle Holders (Matte White and Black)
- Cateye Padrone Bike Computer (larger readout is much easier to read)
- Tate Labs Bar Fly Out Front Mount (highly commended for Cateye / Garmin devices)

Overall, I truly can't recommend another bike in this price range over this 2014 Kestrel Talon 105. Hopefully this is helpful and happy riding!

It came a day after I ordered it (super fast) in a beat up box which was patched-up and re-taped, I was worried there for a while until I finished unpacking. It turned out that it was packed pretty good with foam and zip ties. It took me about an hour since it is more in pieces than a Schwinn road bike I put together about a week ago. So far I am happy with this sharp looking and very light bike (18.6 lbs without the pedals and front brake calipers) that I haven't ridden yet since it did not come with pedals and the pedals I ordered won't be here for another 3 days. I will update my review as soon as I have ridden the bike.

5/2/2013 Update - The Bike is great but the rear tire was punctured by a paper staples from the road and had a flat tire at mile 46...might have to invest on a better tire.

8/10/2013 Update - Changed the rear tire to the Continental Gatorskin at mile 573 after 2 consecutive flats...so far the front tire(original tire & the bike)has 1055 miles and rides about 1 mile/hour faster than
my Schwinn Volare Road Bike(500 + miles) which I ride whenever there is a chance of showers.

I've put a couple hundred miles on this bike in the past couple of weeks, and so far I have nothing but good things to say about it. This is my first road bike after upgrading from a fixed gear Bianchi Pista. The bike is agile, fast, responsive, and handles well. The gears and brakes work beautifully. Another biker who stopped next to me at a traffic light was very impressed with my bike, and he asked, "how much does a bike like that cost?" I happily told him about the great value I received on Amazon.com.

Update: 9/23/14
I logged over 2,000 miles on this bike over the summer, and I still love it as much as when I first bought it. I upgraded the seat (Fizik Arione) and the front wheel (only because I crashed and destroyed the stock wheel). I also put on some high-mileage tires to replace the slicks. I haven't had any problems with the bike whatsoever, and I recently shipped it to my new home in Scotland where I've been riding it around the Scottish countryside.
