A simple, low tech ,non lethal, solution to a housing shortage in my yard. This attractive solid copper portal protector had stopped my red (pine) squirrels from gnawing my bird house entrance holes to a size that accommodates them and starlings. Now my wrens and chickadees can nest in peace. My timid birds thank you Kettle Moraine. Only improvement that could be made is to add stiffness to it, as it is quite flexible. Never the less, still quite effective as it is.

I ordered this because squirrels kept chewing around the holes in my bluebird houses making them too big for the bluebirds. I feel sure this plate will keep them from doing that and the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five was the screws that came with it were very short and I thought it could have been a little more substantial. I put this on my new bluebird house and will report later as to whether it kept the squirrels out this winter.

Looks great, long lasting copper and came with brass screws, Made in USA. Used it on rebuilt Bluebird houses damaged by rodents.

This does the trick! Very nice quality. I purchased both this version and the one already mounted on wood. For my purposes, the one on wood mount was better. I have a nest box (formerly used by a screech owl). The starlings thought it would be great too. I did not appreciate them. I made my own wooded (no metal rim), and the squirrels made major modifications. This allowed the starlings back in. I put the metal one mounted on wood over the hole. This will take care of the problem! The metal only cover (this one) would work too, if the squirrels had not modified initial hole so large.

I mounted them on Bluebird birdhouses, and they fit perfectly. Almost too perfectly though because it's really easy to get the ring of the copper portal to be slightly uneven with the birdhouse entranceway. As a result, there can be a slightly sharp edge that a finger can feel. However, bluebirds likely won't be that sensitive, being as feathers insulate their sense of touch as they go in and out.

I plan to try to attract Eastern Bluebird this spring. These appear to be a good thing to protect their nests from larger birds and deter squirrels from gnawing the entrance.

I had a bit of a problem with some birds pecking the holes out on my Blue Bird houses. I build different sizes, but some other birds seem to like the Blue Bird boxes more. I started putting these around the new ones I built and I suppose there are some largers birds with sore bills this year. Kept the Blue Bird houese for the Blue Birds which is exactly what they are desiged to do. I recommend these plates. They also dress the houses up a bit!
