Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 Deft dialogue caps off this engaging story of a boy-girl friendship. Ten-year-old Kevin Corbett has been to eleven different schools in the six years since his mother died. Now in fifth grade, he feels he cannot face another move precipitated by his father's inability to settle down and face life without his wife. Kevin cannot bring himself to tell his father how important it has become to him to stay put. Into his life appears Bailey, a bright, athletic, foster child with no memory of parents or family. Drawn to each other, they become good friends. Both become determined to keep Mr. Corbett from packing the car and moving. Bailey convinces Kevin that Mr. Corbett needs to fall in love. Their plans at matchmaking include forging a dinner invitation to their teacher and concocting get-rich-quick schemes to raise money for the special dinner for two. Although their plans fall short, it's not before some humorous mishaps and some important revelations for Kevin, Bailey and especially Mr. Corbett. Kevin and Bailey are real kids that readers will care about and grow to like. The adults are characterized in a positive, mature way even with their faults visible. Those who enjoyed Constance C. Greene's I and Sproggy (Viking, 1978) will like this one, too. Elisabeth LeBris, Kenilworth Pub . Sch . System, Ill.

This review is from: Kevin Corbett Eats Flies (Paperback)
The book Kevin Corbett Eats Flies is about a boy who eats flies.Ever since Kevin's mother dies , Kevin and his father have been on the move. Five months their two months here. Kevin has found a place he really likes, and his dad wants to move again. Kevin gets some help from his worst enemy Bailey. She is not impressed that Kevin eats dead flies, and bets him five bucks to eat the class goldfish after it dies. Bailey understands what Kevin is going through, so she makes a plan to make Mr.Corbett want to stay put. "He's sad because your mother died," she says. "He needs another person." That might be a great idea except Bailey intends to fix Kevin's father Mr.Corbett up with Kevin's teacher Miss Holt.
